Bloomberg Challenged on 'No Profiling' Order

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was challenged on Friday over his random stop-and-search policy in the city's subways, which forbids police from using profiling to identify likely terrorists.

"I'm very puzzled - what are you thinking?" caller Victoria asked on Bloomberg's weekly WABC Radio program.

"Profiling is done by advertisers all the time to get a certain group of people that they're targeting," she complained.

"When you have 99 percent of the people that are committing these atrocities, blowing up buildings, being young Arab men, why - for Pete sake - would you not examine the bag of every single Arab? I think even the Arab people would feel safer if you did that."

Bloomberg replied:

"Victoria, number one . . . the law prohibits you from profiling. Period, end of story. So no matter what you think, the courts will not permit you to do that.

"More importantly," he continued, "I think that what this country is founded on is the belief that everybody is innocent until proven guilty and we should not go and profile based on ethnicity or gender or the color of your eyes or whatever.

"The police do have the right to stop people with what's called reasonable suspicion. You know, if somebody's walking down the street with a backpack with wires sticking out of them and a sign saying 'bomb,' of course they stop them."

Bloomberg then explained that even those who refused to have their bags inspected would not attract extra attention from police.

"They can leave, and we will not follow them," he pledged.

Bloomberg is a horse's a-s, who will unfortunatly be reelected because his opponent has the IQ of a tree stump.

the law prohibits you from profiling

What law? If there is one (I doubt) change it, you fool.

There is no prohibition under the law against profiling, or at least not US law.

Selective enforcement of the law (e.g., giving only blacks speeding tickets) is illegal.

There is a huge difference.

Racial profiling it the truth that all terrorists fear, not to mention the politicians.

Logic like this is why my 90 year old great grandmother gets stripped searched at the airport.

He had, according to rumour, no problem profileing when he ran Bloomberg.

All the girls he hired were short, fat, ugly and had bad breath......like hell.

Bloomberg is wrong, totally wrong on all counts. And he's an ass.

There is no such law, and the refusal to profile will likely be the death of many Americans.

the law prohibits you from profiling.

Baloney.

When there is a Ted Bundy type serial killer, they look for white males. There are exceptions, but they are just that, exceptions. The fact is, most serial killers fit this profile. The Council of Caucasian American Relations does not go around screaming that "not all white people are serial killers"

Profiling is some yahoo who stops all, say Black people, for no reason whatsoever.

This is not profiling, its suspect identification.

Someone want to ask Bloomburg why, if we are all "innocent until proven guilty", then why are police searching "innocent" people like they are guilty of something?

So glad I left NYC 10 years ago.

This is so patently stupid it's laughable.

"More importantly," he continued, "everybody is innocent until proven guilty"

If he believes this applies to defending against terrorism, then why inspect ANYONE'S baggage? Are 'randomly' selected people guilty until proved innocent? His line of reasoning does not compute.

You could look at it this way to:

New York has Bloomy;Chuckles;ThunderThighs;and Rev. Al

Mass. has: Kennedy; Kerry; Romoney

PA. has: Fast Eddy, Ricky; and Specter

Anything else? Oh yeah----Ill. has Durbin.....Why are stupid people in office?????

-You know, if somebody's walking down the street with a backpack with wires sticking out of them and a sign saying 'bomb,' of course they stop them."-

Note to terrorists: don't print the word "bomb" on your backpacks. Wires sticking out are probably OK.

I think you landed upon a new fashion trend. Might be the newest fad at school this year: "Not a Bomb" printed on backpacks. I know, no one will laugh...at least not the school officials.

Already, a few Hispanics are complaining that they were profiled because they looked Arab. You can't win.

I note the British police took a woman to the ground when she refused to let them search her backpack.

OK am I the only one hesitant about whom to fear most? The terrorists or this blooming idiot?

First of all, "the law is a ass". Or can be.
Second, if that ass decides I should pretend not to be concerned about a certain murdering, irrational "group" , that ass can kiss my donkey.

I would rather be in jail than dead.
End of story.
