A press conference being held by the Metropolitan Police following the shooting of a suspected suicide bomber in south London this morning has been delayed.
The conference at the QE2 centre in Westminster is now due to start at 2.45pm.
The suspected bomber was shot dead by police after boarding a stationary Northern line train at Stockwell Tube station.
Eyewitnesses said the man had been carrying a large rucksack, was wearing a thick overcoat and looked "petrified, like a cornered fox".
Police ordered passengers off the train before opening fire on the man.
The incident followed four attempted bombings in the capital on Thursday.
We will be covering the conference live here.
More follows . . .
The regular police do not carry guns?
Am I correct in this?
Sounds like the Police are acting upon leads developed from yesterday's attacks.
BBC saying there is something going on at Harrow Road.
MSNBC: Armed police are on Harrow Road..
1425: A Harrow Road resident tells the BBC police have told residents to stay indoors. He says there is a large police presence, which includes armed officers.
*bump*
Crap. Hell of a week in London.
This explains the delay in the news conference.
You are correct....according to Fox n Friends this morning, the police who regularly patrol this area do not carry any weapons or guns...this was a special police unit that went out and shot the suspect....according, again, to Fox, there were two police officers who were holding the suspect down while one police officer shot 5 bullets into the suspect...killing him. I say....it's about time. Good for the Brits!
Shoot first, ask questions later.
In situations like these, it's good practice.
Yes, and it's quickly becoming a hell of a week for the terrorists! It is literally a "kill them before they kill you" situation.
I hope they won't be defensive in their press conference - they have my support and can tell the second guessers and muzzie professional complainers to stick it.
I believe he was shot by plain clothes police officers with handguns. Most police don't carry guns in London but there are the plain clothes ones that sometimes do.
The article I read said that only special units of the police in London now carry guns, AND that more and more police are armed these days.
They might be a bit defensive because it turns out the guy wasn't carrying any explosive devices and you know the press are going to start asking questions on that.
I hope we are not going to hear a bunch of pansy-ass WHINING from the usual suspects about this...
1450: A BBC correspondent says more armed police officers have arrived at the scene on Portnall Road in west London. He says a police dog is also present.
Even though the guy had no explosive device, he kept running after the police told him to stop. If anyone did that in NYC the NYPD would have made him/her into swiss cheese!
