The question is, when were WMDs first mentioned as one of the reasons to launch Operation Iraqi Freedom?

I sometimes turn on Air America between commercials just to see if they have anything relevant to say.

They seem to have a format that they keep repeating(in one way or another.) “We have all these facts to prove Bush and his people are guilty. But we will save you from the details. For my intelligent audience all I need to say is “bush is a bla bla bla ….”

First post, long time lurker :)

The authorization came from from George Tenant's office. At behest of VP cheney. As the Niger Documents were under suspicion.
WE needed some WMD evidence to justify a "legal" invasion of IRAQ. Things didn't go our way.

This is where things took a wrong turn. It's incredible that this hasn't come out sooner. I think Rove did "out" Plame. I think he was doing what he thought was right, to keep things on track. Discredit Wilson and his "fact finding Mission". Keep the ball rolling toward IRAQ. (still puzzled about OBL walking around... We will get to him in due time.)

WE have accomplished alot of things in the last 4.5 to 5 years. We should just weather this out. It will blow away soon enough.

About this Gannon article.
*tin foil hat* material

Let's not get off base here. This whole "CIA out to get Bush.." thing is way out of character based on historical precedents of the CIA way.

They took one on the chin with 9/11, and needed to "CYA" their activities (Wilson trip and the referral to the Justice on the leak). A cross you 't's and dot your 'i's sort of thing.

1) GHW bush Sr. was CIA director.

the CIA is an old boys network. Hence I don't think the CIA squad is out to get Bush JR.

2) The Dems have NO POWER.
not in the executive
Not the judicial
Not in the senate or congress.

3) GW is surrounded by the "old guard" of CIA/SPOOK/Pentagon

community. Not really an "impotent" crowd of people in the intelligence community.

4) Dems haven't had any power in the CIA for long long time.

Tenant?

resigned...

Recives medal of Freedom.

Not what I would call "suspect"

I think the current way of handling this affair is the right one. Let our party leaders hammer the press. The dems can bark all they want.

THey got no bite.

Mission accomplished. I think our time would be better spent looking at some DOmestic issues, and other areas of Foreign policy (China anyone?)

Glad to see you posting. :) Your post, however, seems to be directed at another's post; not mine - as there are some references you make to matters I've not written of.

Nonetheless, I'll bite.

The authorization came from from George Tenant's office. At behest of VP cheney. As the Niger Documents were under suspicion. WE needed some WMD evidence to justify a "legal" invasion of IRAQ. Things didn't go our way.

Based on my own knowledge base -- I'll match you with my own: The CIA was always looking for more data, regardless of the WOT. This is what the CIA "does". One specific search operative may in fact have dealt specifically with documents related to "bills of lading" specifying "uranium" or other WMD-related materials. This would have been true, and ongoing whether or not "the Niger Documents were under suspicion". So, nothing is new here.

What was new? A flunkie CIA operative with past experiences in WMDs and covert operations recommends her husband, Wilson, for the job of digging up "those documents". George Tenet, I believe, would NOT have approved this proposal from Plame. Why? Because it would have been truly stupid operational policy to do so.

This is where things took a wrong turn. It's incredible that this hasn't come out sooner. I think Rove did "out" Plame. I think he was doing what he thought was right, to keep things on track. Discredit Wilson and his "fact finding Mission".

Matt Cooper called Karl Rove in re another matter (healthcare, I believe). Then, fully armed with the real purpose for his call, asked Karl Rove about "Niger". Had Rove replied: No comment, good shot Cooper would have interpreted that as "SEE! WH IS PANICKED". Instead, Karl Rove replied that there was more to Niger than "Wilson's report". Wilson's wife recommended him for the investigative task. This now is interpreted as "outting" Plame in MSM venues.

Of course, the MSM is not focused whatsoever on the "more to Niger than "Wilson's Report". Of course not. One of the usual tactics of the left is "outting". Outting Republican Gays, Outting this, outting that. Outting their own members who don't toe the party line. Republicans do not generally do "outtings". Republicans go after issues; Democrats go after people.

Keep the ball rolling toward IRAQ. (still puzzled about OBL walking around... We will get to him in due time.)

I'm not at all puzzled about OBL walking around, yet. We still have issues with China and Pakistan. Everytime our forces get close, zippo, OBL seems to disappear to Pakistan and/or China. Instead, US is working diplomatically -- would you rather our forces invade un-agreed-upon the sovereignty of other nations in order to 'nab' OBL? This is what the left claims to say they wish to have happen -- invading countries which have not given US clear communications to do so -- WHILE the left accuses the US of Imperialism. US is working with Pakistan and China. OBL will be got. I can wait for channels to be cleared in order to get OBL. He will be got.

WE have accomplished alot of things in the last 4.5 to 5 years. We should just weather this out. It will blow away soon enough.

We have indeed accomplished a lot of things -- I agree with you. We are weathering this latest Dem-wrought rhuburb; but this time, with stronger anger and facts than before. This must also happen. the MSM refuses to awaken to what they are perpetrating upon the public in the name of "politics of meaning". Balderdash.

) GHW bush Sr. was CIA director. the CIA is an old boys network. Hence I don't think the CIA squad is out to get Bush JR.

Nothing wrong with past experience with CIA; good in fact in a leader. Howevers, subscribing to the notion that the "total" CIA is pro-Bush? Hardly. CIA is also subject to bonuses, payraises, etc. Meaning, human. The fact that GHW Bush Sr was a PAST CIA director -- as indicative that the CIA as a whole is ... "pro-Bush"? One would have to suspend HISTORY in order to support that theory. THE CIA of past has been horribly fractured due bad policies and appointments. To suggest the CIA is in full concurment about President Bush, is to suggest that CA Dems with their love of "celebrityness" is thoroughly enamored of Governor Schwarzennegger.

I think our time would be better spent looking at some DOmestic issues, and other areas of Foreign policy (China anyone?)

I'm game. And while the Dems, and Dem Voters are so busy targetting Republicans for "destruction" via usual means (Weapons of Mass MSM), The US has been steadily busy working on domestic issues and other areas of Foreign Policy. As awful as this Rove/Plame matters has been? While the grasshoppers have been playing their usual "make the political, personal" games, the grownups have been enacting wonderful things.

It's become rather easy to provide "issues babysitters" for the MSM and Democrats. Democrats provide their own with "issues babysitters". Repubs just keep on working.

Who is Judith Miller protecting?

My own two cents; she is only doing this "martyr" thing in order that the "shield law" issue be provided with a "living case in example" for a larger game being played out, politically. Ergo, my hunch is that she is merely an operative in a larger game. Does she have names of people she'd rather not discuss? Absolutely. At this stage of the game, however, given my own research -- the "anon reporter sources (aka shield laws) is the operative name of the game in re Judith Miller. I suspect she has contacts in MSM and in foreign governments who are supporting her "right" to go to jail... on their behalf.

WHO of Plame's Superiors AUTHORIZED Wilson's junket to Africa.

Wasn't George Tenent STILL the head of the CIA at the time (July 2003) of the alleged leak?

Considering that Tenent was always said to be Clinton's boy, I was always stunned at the fact that GWB did not replace (fire) Tenent his first day in office.

Once again, GWB's attempt to 'reach out' to the other side has cost him dearly in the world of public relations.

I can't remember the fella's name but he was one of the Dept heads in the Non Proliferation section. Allegedly he retired shortly after this incident.

I did some research on this a few days ago, as usual the MSM is behind the curve:

Here's some more info for you to ponder...how many top CIA employees resigned suddenly for "personal reasons"?

1) George Tenet for "Personal Reasons"

2) James Pavitt within 4 days of Tenet for "Personal Reasons"

3) John McLaughlin, who served as acting director following the resignation of George Tenet also for "Personal Reasons"

4) Jami Miscik,CIA Deputy Diretor for Intelligence for what she called a "natural evolution", although rumor has it that she was asked to leave.

There are many others who resigned as a result of confrontations with Goss and his aide, Patrick Murray who were "cleaning out" the CIA of Dem political operatives and they quit supposedly due to those conflicts, specifically citing Murray as the reason. Now here is where it gets interesting:

...on Nov. 5, Murray raised the issue of leaks with the associate deputy director of counterintelligence. Referring to previous media leaks regarding personnel, he said that if anything in the newly appointed executive director’s personnel file made it into the media, the counterintelligence official “would be held responsible,” according to one agency official and two former colleagues with knowledge of the conversation.

Source

Also according to that article, it must be noted that the associate deputy director of counterintelligence's name was being withheld because she is undercover.

Something else I found, which at the time I dismissed as moonbat rantings...

Why did DCI George Tenet suddenly resign on June 3rd, only to be followed a day later by James Pavitt, the CIA's Deputy Director of Operations (DDO)?

The real reasons, contrary to the saturation spin being put out by major news outlets, have nothing to do with Tenet's role as taking the fall for alleged 9/11 and Iraqi intelligence “failures” before the upcoming presidential election.

Both resignations, perhaps soon to be followed by resignations from Colin Powell and his deputy Richard Armitage, are about the imminent and extremely messy demise of George W. Bush and his Neocon administration in a coup d'etat being executed by the Central Intelligence Agency. The coup, in the planning for at least two years, has apparently become an urgent priority as a number of deepening crises threaten a global meltdown. Shortly after the “surprise” Tenet-Pavitt resignations, current and former senior members of the U.S. intelligence community and the Justice Department told journalist Wayne Madsen, a former Naval intelligence officer, that they were directly connected to the criminal investigation of a 2003 White House leak that openly exposed Valerie Plame as an undercover CIA officer.

Seymour Hersh dropped a major bombshell that went virtually unnoticed, 54 paragraphs deep into an October 27, 2003 story for the New Yorker titled “The Stovepipe.”

“Who produced the fake Niger papers? There is nothing approaching a consensus on this question within the intelligence community. There has been published speculation about the intelligence services of several different countries. One theory, favored by some journalists in Rome, is that [the Italian intelligence service] Sismi produced the false documents and passed them to Panorama for publication.

“Another explanation was provided by a former senior C.I.A. officer. He had begun talking to me about the Niger papers in March, when I first wrote about the forgery, and said, 'Somebody deliberately let something false get in there.'

He became more forthcoming in subsequent months, eventually saying that a small group of disgruntled retired C.I.A. clandestine operators had banded together in the late summer of last year and drafted the fraudulent documents themselves.”

Source

Okay...there is much misinformation in the article which has now been disproven, as Rove/Bush/Cheney did not leak Plame's name, but what about the basic premise that this whole thing was a coup set up by the CIA?

Could it have been, that Plame, working within the CIA during the lead-up to the war in Iraq, was part of a conspiracy in the CIA to supply erroneous information on WMD, knowing full well, that not finding the WMD's once we were in Iraq, would greatly discredit the President?

See my # 95, especially the part I at first thought was moonbat ranting. I was researching that angle a few days ago.

It now seems quite plausible.

Yes it does.

Ranin nut,

Some very astute revelations there good work!! Unfortunately the mouthbreathing press just repeats the daily line from the NYT.

Here's some good reading from the Senate Iraq report. This Niger business starts on page 36.

http://intelligence.senate.gov/iraqreport2.pdf

Several things jump out at me from the report.

1. There is an FBI investigation into the dissemination of the fake Niger Doc's requested by Sen Rockefeller. Due to the investigation...many facts about them were kept out of the Report. (How convienent).

2. The whole Niger business is heavily sourced by HUMINT. nearly every paragraph discribing the background has blacked out classifications and codewords. Much of this was highly, highly classified back in 2002 & 2003.

3. Joe Wilson did not maintain a Security Clearance with the US Gov't. For his Niger trip he was granted an "Operational Secret Clearance" which should have been deactivated upon the end of his usefullness. He did not sign a non disclosure agreement(again, convienently) and was debriefed from his super secret trip at his home by CIA personnel while Valerie served coffee. Shades of John Deustch!!!

4. Since the Niger business was heavily sourced by HUMINT (again some of the most highly classified info on the planet). I believe Joes OP ED piece released HUMINT sourced classified info. This is the very thing the Dems are having a hissy fit about...endangering these sources(people)!

5. Later he discussed classified Niger documents which he shouldn't have known about without having a Security Clearance and working within that Special Access Program. Was the little wifey talking shop at home?????

6. The Report also mentions the Iraqi's attempting to buy Uranium from the Congolese in 1999, possibly the reason behind the use of the word "Africa" in the POTUS SOU speech.
