So the idea is that, since SUVs are pretty much uesless for older people, the SUV as such is doomed to extinction.

No. People will always have children. They will always have home improvement projects and groceries and rugrats. Until, that is, they grow older.

And then? Well, their children will buy the SUVs.

I'm 67 and don't have any kids to haul around and i'm not giving up my pickup, I wouldn't drive one of the tin cans they sell today if I was paid to. With the tools I carry i'm 5,100# empty, don't get in my way or i'll flatten you.

SUV's should have been named VIAD's (Vehicles for Insecure, Arrogant Dorks)
