A group of teachers and translators in Japan on Wednesday sued Tokyo's outspoken nationalist governor for allegedly calling French a "failed international language," a news report said.

Now people can get sued for telling the truth? What's the world coming to?

Ishihara's a jackass. I know this from past personal contact in Tokyo, and also having read his materials and knowing quite succinctly what he is all about.

The Brits say "one thousand million" too. Their "billion" is equivalent to our "trillion."

It is amazing isn't it?

The big parade of overnight Japan specialists here, due to this quote, now showing up on a FR Japan thread and singing the praises of Ishihara.

If they only knew what he stands and stood for. They would NOT wish for an American version of this guy.

Good comment about Rape of Nanjing there, too (and Shin's take on that)...

Even "billion" and "trillion" are bi-million and tri-million (of a sort).

The decimal terms are different. (think Mega)

Personally, I think Spanish is a repugnant language. Even if it is used extensively in Latin America. I'd rather learn French; the language isn't so bad. It's the people (specifically, Parisians) that suck.

My family was rushed out of a Montreal restaurant for daring to speak English inside. We were outright refused service and told to leave (in English).

I was actually thinking what a mixed blessing it would be to have an American version of Ishihara. He would probably be vilified by liberals everywhere--not without reason, given his views on Japanese atrocities in WW2.

On the positive side, he's anti-immigration/anti-illegal immigration, and he's a nationalist. I wouldn't mind either of those qualities in an American politician. Being unapologetic about the blemishes in a country's history, on the other hand, is not a good thing.

Time to invade Montreal again! We just need to find another General Wolfe.

I think in her case it's because it has been completely useless from a practical standpoint. With the exception of college courses and a single trip to France in 1968 she hasn't "used" it a single time. I think living the last 15 years in California (and now southern California) is what prompted her to make the "Spanish would be preferrable" comment... at least you could use it from time to time - or at very least be able to understand people around you.

Thanks, I thought it might be the same guy. I seem to recall some of his ultra-nationalist people falling afoul of the sword control laws there in the 90's. (For anyone thinking I'm kidding, I'm not. Japan has sword control.) Seems those old WWII habits are hard to cure...

I never exactly concerned myself with the practicality of a language when I was learning it. Hence why I would learn French over Spanish.

As far as it goes, I think the majority of Japanese are not quite so blase about war crimes. They are fairly committed to pacifism any more; at the same time, they don't seem to be too willing to own up to what they did in WW2. I would think that's a cultural thing, possibly something to do with losing face (but that's just my conjecture--I'm an American-bound gaijin; what do I know?).

It was a silly thing to say, true. But I'd say not as silly as suing him over it.

He'd bomb Pearl Harbor again, just to get the message across if we didn't understand the first time, such is his anti-Americanism.

The French don't need to count very high. France is number one, and the rest don't count.
