Quick One: Cornyn, Garza, Clement lead
the GOPNation ^ | July 3, 2005 | the GOPNation

From VA Beach, interrupting our 4th of July holiday weekend - as many are - to update Supreme Court wanna-be's list... Buzz in Capital is that O'Connor's replacement is right now a horse race between Cornyn, Garza and Clement. Out: Gonzales. It appears that Cornyn is the wildcard, with Garza the 'it' candidate for the time being. Falling: Roberts, Luttig. Situation is fluid, with the president not expected to pick a successor until after G8. Of note: White is thrilled to finally appoint a justice, but those in the know thought that it would be Chief Justice, and are surprised that it wasn't and isn't. ('candidate' links included)

Cornyn is definitely Supreme Court material. If Bush selects him, Governor Perry might well appoint Henry Bonilla as his replacement, which gives hispanic Republicans a boost.

Agree, Perry could also appoint himself to fill Cornyn spot and avoid coming battle in fall. But then again would not want Dewhurst to run for gov. Hutch could then run for gov. and Bonilla for senate. Convoluted yes, but some fun.

It'll be Clement.

Bush is not going to have eight men overturn Roe. He has to pick a white woman because the Cheif's replacement is Garza. It'll be the woman. She'll be made Chief Justice when the time comes, too.

IMO

In absence of Estrada, Garza's a possibility but the buzz on the capitol is meaningless. None of them know who the President will pick. He isn't talking to anyone that will leak.

"White is thrilled to finally appoint a justice"

Who is White? Were you misquoting the Jesse Jackson and it was supposed to read "Whitey is thrilled..."?

Okay...I'll buy that...we'll soon know. I'm a B'ham gal living on the LEFT coast and love all of the AL people making it to the top.

Well, my choice is Garza now, and Luttig when Rehnquist steps down. Let the Democrats have the summer to bash a Hispanic and show their true colors.

I would be happy with Cornyn.

He guested with Laura Ingraham one day last week and she asked him about it.

It was obvious that he was interested and involved. He joked that he hadn't received a call yet and mentioned how great it was to be a senator, blah, blah.

He's from Texas and a good conservative. Don't know how well Bush knew him from Texas politics, but he surely did know him somewhat. Cornyn was a popular attorney general of Texas before he ran for senate.

He's been quite up front on issues for a first term senator.

I would also like Janice Rogers Brown a lot.

His bio looks good and the Marine Corps Captain impresses me alot.

Garza is a Marine? That's nearly enough for me right there.

Who is White?

I'm guessing he meant "W" and somehow that got changed accidentally to "White." Anyway, it would make sense: "W is thrilled to finally appoint a SC justice..."

You could say they won't attack a sitting senator, but then there was Ashcroft. You could say they won't attack an Hispanic but then there was Estrada. You could say they won't attack a woman but then there was Owen.

Bottom line is that they will attack anyone like hungry sharks in the Gulf. I almost think it would be better to send up somebody who *won't* be confirmed just to let the Dems blow their wad and make ACLU, PAW, NOW, etc spew their venom and waste their money.

THEN withdraw the nomination and hit them with who you really want. After they've Borked the first one, they won't have the money, fire and brimstone to Bork the second one without looking like the unappeasable extremists that they are. That's why I'd nominate Larry Klayman or Kenneth Starr.

I can't imagine Cornyn not being confirmed. Maybe that's why he is the wildcard in the mix.

Clement is definitely in the Scalia, Thomas mold. No chance for her to be another Souter.

It is times like these I wish there were a "Ratings" for judges--like the ACU has for congresscritters.

I think I would be happy with any of Cornyn, Clemment, Brown and Garza. I think I like Garza best since he might remove thoughts of Gonzoles if other openning happen.

Heck with this many good candidates we need to have Renquist, Stevens and some other of the older Justices retire now.

You are pretty sharp to figure that out, it's probably exactly what happened, some macro or spell-checker thingy! Thanks for the reply.

I am sure the Democrats will bring up the execution of Napoleon Beazley -- Judge Luttig's father's murderer. Beazley was one of the last murderers executed for a murder committed when he was seventeen -- which is now prohibited under Roper v. Simmons.

I retract what I stated. Clement is the worst of the three candidates, not likely to overturn Roe and, possibly, a Souter-like justice.

Edith Jones would be the rock-solid, conservative female justice.

I was wondering who might replace him. He is a good spokesman in the Senate.
