Do we know he murdered them? Could he have been a secondary perp at the crime scene, not the murderer himself. Or could the murderer have taken the kids and handed them over to a child molestor he knew of, just to further horrify the family and the public, in a lesson over a drug deal gone sour?

According to an article posted upthread, autopsy revealed that Brenda Groene & McKenzie (?) had been using marijuana & meth. Perhaps the adults were wasted?
