Thanks for that info Maggie. For all my growing up years & most of my adult years, Dunkirk NY (about an hour from Niagara) was were I spent the fourth holiday. Usually in the course of the visit there would be a trip to the falls but I never knew about this event. I will surely look it up if I get back to the area in that time frame. My aunt & Uncle are both having more health issues & not sure how much longer they will desire to keep the large home on the lake. It is lovely to be sure, but a lot of work (and the winters really suck with Lake Erie breathing down your back when you are perched on the Lake shore)

While I was waiting for Monday the Fourth of July to arrive,
I leafed through my album of pix from last year's Finest Fourth Picnics --

==============================================

dixie sass sets up her Southern first of the day repast
with a kettle on a spirit stove, teapot, biscuits, two cups.....

==============================================

Sistahs Nan & Maggie (known *not to cook* often)
relax before going to the picnic.....

==============================================

deadhead's family gathers for their picnic.....

==============================================

Aquamarine & Hubby hurry to get to
the firemen's picnic.....

==============================================

And last - but certainly not least -
found this one from Mama & Papa Bear's Album
(year not known) --

==============================================

Can *fully understand* this, as I lived for 2 1/2 years in Rochester, NY - -
and know well 'The Lake Effect' of that whole region....

Side Note:

As a native Floridian, the very first snow I ever saw was at age 19 in Rochester.

Little did I know I later was to heavily *experience* it in Rapid City, South Dakota for a "warm-up" - -
to spending 3 1/2 years in Fairbanks, Alaska where it *really, really* got deep,
and did not have the grace go away until late MAY!!

Happy to Hunker Down in Lovely Moderate Dixie --

Ohhh.. thanks for delightful pix.. I think I am going to use one. fix it up a little.... hmmmmm of course my schedule is not too good for lots of photo editing.. I need to get Oliver out for at least 45 min of running etc..and going to see movie Howl;s Moving Castle tonight & dinner out with friend. His movie boundaries are much tighter than mine.. I can see most anything, but his list of stars and movie types that are "nos" limit us a bit. I have found my different friend each have differnt tastes in movies so it all works out

Maggie, you have lived so many different places and done many exciting things. Have you chronicled a lot of them (other than this type of posting)? I keep thinking I need to start archiving my events etc. Not sure anyone will be interested in years ahead, but never know. I surely wish my grandparents & great grandparents had kept a diary or journaled..

Yeah, but would I? LOL. I think not. I bet Marissa would love it though.

Where is your sense of adventure???

I think it is where my "get up and go" went. LOL.

Memory Lane there. I lived in San Fran-sicko in the early '70s, used to take the ferry over to Sausalito and Tiburon. Great shopping in Sausalito, food in Tiburon and then there's the hike up Mt. Tamalpais. Pleasant memories.

Dolly, I have enjoyed reading this thread more than I can tell you.

Because of the mess, stress and maddness of our move, this is all I can manage for the 4th and I doubled the recipe. Straight from Kraft...lol.

Uncle Sam's Red, White & Blue Parfaits

Prep Time: 10 min

Total Time: 4 hr 10 min

Makes: 10 servings, 1 parfait each

2 cups boiling water, divided

1 pkg. (4-serving size) JELL-O Brand Gelatin, any red flavor

1 pkg. (4-serving size) JELL-O Brand Berry Blue Flavor Gelatin

2 cups cold water, divided

1 tub (8 oz.) COOL WHIP Whipped Topping, thawed

STIR 1 cup boiling water into each flavor dry gelatin in separate large bowls 2 minutes until completely dissolved. Stir 1 cup cold water into gelatin in each bowl.

POUR each gelatin flavor into separate 8-inch square pans.

REFRIGERATE 4 hours or until firm. Cut gelatin in each pan into 1/2-inch cubes. Layer alternating flavors of gelatin cubes and the whipped topping in 10 dessert glasses. Store in refrigerator.

A friend had a houseboat in Sausalito back then, it was fun staying on it. One of the most "unusual" little communities there is anywhere. Sausalito and that area are beautiful, as are many parts of California.

A couple of pictures of Sausalito from the hills above taken a few months ago.

Heh, I am living them now. Roses right out the window, about 50 wineries within 10 miles...

We'll get you guys to a good DC visit yet. I just hope this thread does justice to the pair of you, and all the rest who have served the nation to keep July 4 Glorious.

Great to hear from you!

Glad to see folks enjoying your work, Dolly & Billie. MEG33, thanks for checking in, and for that link. Molly, it's sure nice to see your name. Greetings to you, and please say hello to our friends at ATRW.

Things got off to a good Independence Day bang today when some dubiously-documented twit with next to no insurance ran a red at 50mph and threw a Ford Explorer onto the front of my g*-friend's Lexus. No one was hurt, thankfully, although it was inches from truly ugly. Kinda upset the day's momentum. BUT, my daughter flew in this evening from Miami after finishing a summer program, and we're all together for the rest of the summer. Ain't no Undocumented Whatever in a now-smashed Honda gonna ruin a Glorious Fourth, or a Summer in Maine that starts next week. Yeah!

Fourth of July in our small town up in Maine is wonderful: I'd like to say its the true stuff of apple pie, because it is, but it's so much more. They launch fireworks from an extended dock into the lake, and the guy who has to set the rockets, light the fuse, then sprint away to safety puts on more of a show than the fireworks themselves! It's too funny. This year, though, we're staying at the Harbor in Baltimore. I'm hoping we'll be able to see Ft. McHenry and its repro Old Glory from the hotel, and through the Inner Harbor fireworks.

Happy Fourth to all!

My niece gave me that Lemonade Pie recipe years ago. I haven't fixed it in quite awhile, but as I recall, it is really good, and very easy. Of course, I love anything with lemon in it.
