I liked the one where the father is explaining to Calvin that the world didn't come into color until the 1930s.

That is my all time favorite. I've used it several times in discussions with young children. The look on their face (as well as their parents) is great!

Calvin and Hobbes is my favorite comic strip of all time. The imagination he embellished his characters with was outstanding. In fact, I used to subscribe to the LA Times, simply because they carried Calvin and Hobbes. Once they no longer carried it, my subscription was terminated.

I think the end of that strip has Calvin laying awake in bed with his eyes wide open. LOL.

...he wanted to stop before he started rehashing old material.

Surely there's enough new stuff happening nowadays to replenish his inkwell. Lord knows we could all use his daily insight today to brighten thing up and make us laugh again.

I got most of his collection books before my kids were born. My daughter found the books a couple of years ago tucked away in a box (Forgotten during many moves while I was in the Navy). Its a pleasant surprise to find one sitting on the couch in the living room where she left it. Ill pick it up and read it from cover to cover. The old jokes still crack me up.

Well, that's the difference between C&H and Bloom County. What's new today, is old hat and trite three years from now. Watterson didn't really spend much time on daily issues -- he was more focused on timeless stuff. It'd be hard to keep that up for 365 strips/year forever.

Whatever happened to Bill and why did he stop such a great comic strip in 1995?

If you're really interested, pick up his Tenth Anniversary volume, it has the history of Watterson (written by himself) as a cartoonist as well as a history of Calvin and Hobbes. Also has a short synopsis of various strips/series through the years.

I have an 8 year-old who, when wearing a striped shirt, is the dead ringer for Calvin

We have spent hours reading and re-reading the Calvin and Hobbes comics!!

sometimes devolve into "Brother-speak" and I don't know what they're talking about.

My twin daughters do that. It's real freaky!

"Our sons read (and re-read) Calvin & Hobbes just about daily"

My daughter (now grown) wore her calvin and hobbes books out, now my grandson has his own and reads them over and over! Both have had superior vocabularies from pre-school to present, but that may be just because smart kids love C&H!

:)

Compare and contrast to, e.g., Bloom County, which was great for its time, but didn't age well at all.

True! I was a serious Bloom County fan, but now it provides little more than some '80s nostalgia. Worst of all, though, is the way Berke Breathed went and jumped the shark--he can't do funny to save his life today.

the father is explaining to Calvin that the world didn't come into color until the 1930s.

I liked the one where the father is explaing the weight limit signs on bridges, driving larger and larger trucks over them until they collapse. I miss C&H!
