Sure...I didn't mean the military list to be exclusive, just to mention that it seemed that no military even got considered.

I like your list, although I'd drop Hamilton about 3 spots. I think it's tragic that the founding fathers are being forgotten, like the People's Republic of Berkely renaming Jefferson Elementary. Of course, for many Californians, FDR is considered ancient history.

Pres. Reagan defeated the only superpower we faced since Great Britain during George Washington's time. Only this time the weapons were nuclear and could have destroyed the world. He defeated this terrible threat WITHOUT going to war, a miraculous feat that no other president in our history was able to accomplish. I do know history, and he got my vote.

This contest has been run in many countries.

In England, initial contest (I think) Churchill beat Diana.

In Canada, Tommy Douglas founder of their National Health Care beat Terry Fox a brave cancer victim (fund raiser).

I would if I knew how--it seems everytime I post something like that, no matter how careful I am, I get 15 posts from people saying "Why is this in news????" I will send the list to your FRmail--it's a really good list. Collateral had a good score by James Newton Howard, one of my faves, but the same director's Heat by Eliot Goldenthal was better--though both are crammed with tracks by other artists.

It is the fact that it takes so MANY "Great Americans" to make her what she is...that makes the country so great! We didn't need Queen Victoria or Napoleon to make us great.—We needed about a million really decent people.

You summed it up perfectly.

What does it mean? They're headed in our direction. I like that and it seems like a pretty big win for our ideas

I'd say so. Generally I expect Liberals to run away with online polling. I didn't vote, but if I had I understand we were allowed three votes? Mine would have gone to Washington and Lincoln.

That men like Ben Franklin, who flies under the radar most of the time made it is cause for celebration. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson usually take the spotlight from him. Representative, imo, of another segment of American society populated by people that gave rise to the first plane that flew, reaching the moon, the atom bomb (libs would hate that) to name a few inventions.

That RR and GWB topped Clinton and FDR? That means in modern day leaders of the Conservative/Republican movement outnumber the Liberal/democrat movement. Again, very telling since Liberals usually walk away with online voting.

Lincoln and washington? Nod of appreciation and respect still given to those that founded this country.

Some need to lighten up. Sure, Americans could stand to be better educated but that isn't what this is about. It's a popularity contest. And I really don't think people can complain about the uneducated masses as the cause when Reagan tops the list by admitted desire of many on the board. Great American? Absolutely. Higher than Washington or Lincoln? I beg to differ. Just take what the polling represents and be grateful. We still outnumber the Libs in ideology preference and representation as the polling would attest. :-)

Euphoric, please accept my eternal gratitude.

Since Reagan won, I'm sure I would've had no idea had you not posted this.

Somehow, I don't expect this to be on the front page of tomorrow's New York Times.

And Matt Lauer is no doubt in hiding for the next six weeks.

I would have to give "greatest American" status to the father of our country, George Washington. The battle with the Hessians and the entire Revolutionary War is, its own time, as if not more compelling than defeating communism (which still does exist in the world, BTW, just ask any imprisoned Christian pastor in China, Cuba, North Korea....)

Why not Ben Franklin, he's a good example of the "entrepenuer" spirit of America and was successful in several different areas, and was the elder of the founding fathers and many of them looked up to him, I thought he would have been the best pick.

I hate it when these kind of things either turn into a popularity contest, or an us versus them contest with all of them pushing Clinton or FDR and all us pushing Bush or Reagan, it kinda ruins the whole point. I still like Reagan up there but not number one.

ITA. These polls tend to celebrate politicians, celebrities and a few "movement" leaders. But it is men like Ben Franklin who help us realize the dreams of men like Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln. Not to mention the soldier as someone said earlier in the thread.

Plus Ben Franklin seems to have had a great sense of humor and spirit of adventure. I always think of him as the guy in the back row that throws spit wads and makes off color jokes. You think he is a total goof, but somehow grows up to astonish you with his genius and wisdom. I bet the guy had a twinkle in his eye the entire time he was changing the world.

I'd probably put George Washington in the top spot because he not only governed, but was willing to fight for this country. He was first. Beyond that, we are truly blessed. That there is room for so many great people and accomplishments, and that it could be anyone of us is truly amazing.

"Why not Ben Franklin,..."

We like him too, the kid shares a birthday with him. He was really famous in his life time too, a true pioneer of science. And Philly's all time favorite son. Truly a Great American.

I wish that other George Washington, Professor Carver had made the list. I am a big fan of his. Watched a great bio of him on the Discovery Channel a while ago, he seemed like such a sweet man.

I agree with your first place choice of George Washington. In the past two weeks, I've read David McCullough's 1776, Joseph Ellis' His Excellency, and I'm currently in the middle of Willard Sterne Randall's George Washington: A Life. I highly recommend them all. Even though I majored in history at the country's finest state university (ahem), I learned many new things about Washington. The recently published books on Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams are excellent, too. Better than anything on TV, for sure. Our schools have reduced these amazing men to caricatures or worse.

Glad Reagan won, but the contest was confusing. They publicized it as both the greatest American and the famous American who most influenced each voter. Those two choices can be quite different.

"See, there is still hope for this country!"

Actually no, if commie MLK was voted amongst the top five.

We're slipping and sliding down the abyss.
