HPD defends controversial decision to take photos of day laborers

HOUSTON - Officials with the ACLU are up in arms over the way police are handling day laborers in west Houston.

Police admit they just started stopping undocumented workers, taking their names and pictures. The American Civil Liberties Union says it's a clear violation of the worker's constitutional rights. Police say they're just trying to address complaints of trespassing and loitering.

"It's a quality of life issue that we have to address and that responsibility has fallen on the shoulders of the police department," said Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt.

"We and the Supreme Court of the United States believe that yes, even persons that are illegal aliens in this country have certain constitutional rights and these are certainly among them," said Michael Skadden with the ACLU.

Houston police say the pictures are meant to prove the undocumented workers have been previously warned not to loiter or trespass if they're ever in court.

What's the logic behind that statement, mr. communist? Did the U.S from its inception have designs on the entire world? Or simply the unbounded arrogance to define "rights" for every country on earth?

I can't accept either one.

My picture was taken against my will when I submitted an application for a driver's license. The police have access to that?

What's the difference?

I forgot. All ACLU threads should have the following as a reminder:

Roger Baldwin, the co-founder of the ACLU said: “I am for socialism, disarmament, and ultimately, for abolishing the state itself. … I seek social ownership of property, the abolition of the properties class, and sole control of those who produce wealth. Communism is the goal. I don’t regret being part of the communist tactic. I knew what I was doing. I was not an innocent liberal. I wanted what the communists wanted and I traveled the United Front road to get it.” In spite of Baldwin’s Communist leanings, President Jimmy Carter awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom on January 16, 1981.

Baldwin didn’t create the ACLU in a vacuum, he had plenty of help. A group of Communist Party officials, fellow travelers, anarchists and radicals joined Baldwin to found the ACLU in 1920.

Wow. so the ACLU asserts the right not to be photographed when one is in a public place and may possibly be breaking the law?

Yikes, every bank security cam and traffic cam is now just out the window, never mind some amateur photographer taking pics of crowds in the street.

oh, and its a *constitutional* right, no less...

The Organisational Platform of the Libertarian Communists produced by participants of the Makhnovist movement in the Russian Revolution (see Section A.5.4). They point out that:

"The class struggle created by the enslavement of workers and their aspirations to liberty gave birth, in the oppression, to the idea of anarchism: the idea of the total negation of a social system based on the principles of classes and the State, and its replacement by a free non-statist society of workers under self-management.

"So anarchism does not derive from the abstract reflections of an intellectual or a philosopher, but from the direct struggle of workers against capitalism, from the needs and necessities of the workers, from their aspirations to liberty and equality, aspirations which become particularly alive in the best heroic period of the life and struggle of the working masses.

"The outstanding anarchist thinkers, Bakunin, Kropotkin and others, did not invent the idea of anarchism, but, having discovered it in the masses, simply helped by the strength of their thought and knowledge to specify and spread it." [pp. 15-16]

Like the anarchist movement in general, the Makhnovists were a mass movement of working class people resisting the forces of authority, both Red (Communist) and White (Tsarist/Capitalist) in the Ukraine from 1917 to 1921. As Peter Marshall notes "anarchism . . . has traditionally found its chief supporters amongst workers and peasants." [Demanding the Impossible, p. 652]

DOES THIS GIVE YOU A CLUE AS TO THEIR ULTIMATE GOAL. THE ACLU IS JUST SUPPORTING THEIR BELIEF IN A KINDER GENTLER COMMUNISM.

"undocumented workers"

I hate this phrase. I was amazed when ABC did a story actually sympathetic to those against illegal immigrants the other day, and they did not say "undocumented workers," but illegal aliens.

I was floored.

The presumption is and always has been that in order to have Constitutional rights, a person must be either a citizen of this country, or a legal resident.

So the ACLU must be addressing the illegal aliens' Mexican Constitutional rights, which they should maybe take up with the corrupt pindejos in Mexico City.
