Seeking More Than Apologies for Slavery -Activists Hope Firms' Disclosure Will Lead to Reparations

It was a brief mea culpa, a few short paragraphs typed on a sheet of paper. "On behalf of Wachovia Corporation, I apologize to all Americans, and especially to African Americans and people of African descent," Chairman and chief executive G. Kennedy Thompson said after a study found that his company had purchased two banks that exploited slaves.

Wachovia revealed on June 1 that one of the banks put hundreds of slaves to work on railroads and another accepted more than 100 more as collateral on defaulted loans in the 1800s. Wachovia, one of the nation's largest banks, was required by the city of Chicago to investigate its past to participate in the redevelopment of a housing project on the city's South Side.

Chicago's law is the result of a campaign by a network of black politicians, lawyers, professors and reparations activists who say they want Americans to know that slave purchases were often financed with bank loans and insured.

Since 2000, when the first disclosure law was enacted by the state of California, similar laws have been passed in Los Angeles, Detroit and Philadelphia. New Orleans is considering a version of the law, and numerous other city lawmakers have expressed interest, said Dorothy J. Tillman, the Chicago alderman who sponsored the ordinance...

I want reparations for the family members who fought to free the slaves and died for their efforts.

Will the free blacks and indians who owned slaves have to pay? What about the african tribes who took the black slaves in the first place and sold them? Anything for the half a million dead mostly white union soldiers who freed the slaves?

And I want reparations for ALL THE U.S. CITIZENS who have had to listen to these leftist, political extortionists try to scam money from taxpayers who never had anything to do with slavery --- plus reparations for all the money they have cost this country in their stupid pursuit to not only extort money, but keep the "victimization crowd" alive and well...(we call them far-left Democrats!)

...a network of black politicians, lawyers, professors and reparations activists...

Scroom all.

I am really, really..., no, really, tired of hearing about this crap.

I will never willingly part with one cent of my money for these welfare kings, poverty pimps and ambulance chasing P'sOS.

But I am not so naive as to think the goobermint will ask my permission before it gives it away to them.

Anybody who thinks that Wachovia is going to actually cough up money for this has obviously never done business with Wachovia. A number of years ago I was stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB, NC, in the middle of Wachovia-land. We used to call Wachovia Walk-Over-Ya.

Talk is cheap. And they'll give you all of that you can stand. It is the thing that they do best. Getting actually money out of them? Ha! When pigs fly.

For that reason, I think this whole thing is some liberal idiot's wet dream, but no more than that. Even if Wachovia is headed up by a pandering idiot, which it is.

We should all claim that we are of African descent - make them disprove evolution.

If the oldest living fossilized remains were found in Africa (i.e "Lucy), and the widely held belief among scientists is that we evolved into humans in Africa and then migrated to the other continents, then I submit that we are ALL of African descent and can claim so on our mortgage applications, our student loan applications, our job applications, etc.

To disprove the arguement, they would need to disprove evolution.

And since we are all of African descent, there is no sense re-distributing wealth for reparations.

Also, we could eliminate affirmative action.

Perhaps we shall see England file against Rome for reparations. Time seems irrelevant to these greed-engourged activists!

Let me get this straight. One hundred fifty years ago a bank accepts as collateral a borrower's slaves. Everything is legal. 150 years later that bank is bought by another bank. You now say that the shareholders of the buying bank owe reparations to black people in general? This is a hybrid between insanity and extortion.

The point of all this is not restitution, it has absolutely nothing to do with improving anyone's life - it NEVER does. Their attempt is to destroy the future opportunities of everyone by burning down the house which could one day employ the unemployed.
