G8 for database on paedophiles

Interior and justice ministers from the Group of Eight nations were gathering in Britain on Thursday for a summit expected to agree a new international database to catch paedophiles, among other measures.

British home secretary Charles Clarke, hosting the two-day gathering in Sheffield, northern England, said he was "confident"his counterparts from the G8 industrialised nations’ group would back the plan. Under the scheme, adults who commit sexual offences against children will have their faces scanned into a computer archive to which police in all G8 nations will have access.

The computer software would even be powerful enough to identify whether a room or background scene had been used in two or more images of child abuse, allowing cross-border paedophile gangs to be targeted.

Clarke said he hoped the database would be up and running during 2005, with other nations likely to join the scheme later. "I’m confident that we will (get the G8’s support),"Clarke told BBC radio.

"The G8 two years ago commissioned a report on how we could do this with new technology and how we can work together well.

"Interpol has done the work... and there has been very good progress. We have been able to use the technology and take it forward. And as a means of tackling this kind of vile organised crime, it is very positive."

The ministers from Britain, Canada, the United States, Germany, France,Italy, Japan, and Russia were set to discuss measures to combat terrorism, and crimes such as human trafficking, a spokes-man for the meeting said.

This is a foot in the door for International Big Brother. Tracking criminals across borders is already done by Interpol, which has access to criminal records databases for all G8 nations. This is an extra goody for governments.

Everybody hates pedophiles (with good reason), so nobody will object to setting up an international database to keep track of their locations.

Likewise, watch for the other shoe to drop as former convicts are the first (but not the last) to be forced by governments to have tracking devices implanted in their bodies.

Once the infrastructure is in place, governments will require citizens to carry ID's embedded with locator chips for their own safety (the implants will probably be voluntary, just for convenience, at first).
