Shinnecock Indians In Suit Over Hamptons

(1010 WINS) SOUTHAMPTON, Long Island The Shinnecock Indians are threatening a lawsuit - claiming they were given title to 36-hundred acres of land in the Hamptons back in 1703 -- and now they want it back. The land includes Southampton College, the Shinnecock Hills Golf Course and some of the most expensive real estate on Long Island's east end.
Attorney John Peebles - who represents the Shinnecock Indians - says he will file a lawsuit in U-S District Court in Central Islip this week seeking the land and billions of dollars in damages.
Southampton Supervisor Patrick Heaney says the lawsuit would be retalliation - because his town has fought plans by the Indians to build a casino in Hampton Bays.
The local Indians are pulling this in Whatcom County, WA. They claim that they were cheated when they sold the property, so they should get it back. They have claimed the beach in front of all the houses and won't even let the homeowners walk on it. The leftist judges usually side with the Indians.
huh...Next we'll see the same as what happened in Canada with the self government/policing. Total bunch of BS!!!
This would be hysterically funny if it wasn't for the fact that they can probably find a judge to whom this makes perfect sense.
What is the world coming to....first the Israelis are forced to return the West Bank and Gaza to the Palestinians and now we're on the hot seat to give Long Island back to the Shinnecock (can I say that on FreeRep?) Native Americans...I refuse to use the word "Indians" unless preceded by the word Cleveland.
Dang, this will be fun!...but I think The Shinnecock Indians ought to save their money....put it into a casino or into cigarette stores....
The "Shinnecock" are basically more black than Indian, just like the Pequots(the Foxwoods casino owners) in Conn.

The State of New York screws over its Indian tribes once again. As the successor government to the British colonial rule, this falls back directly on the state. Claims based on the royal land grants to the Indian tribes, many of which date from the 17th and 18th centuries, are recognized in US courts.
Compare with the dealings the Iroquois Confederation (Six Nations) has had with the State of New York, which predated even the Revolution.

Indian tribes do not pay local property taxes to any state on qualified reservation land. If this 3600 acres is part of a royal grant to the Shinnecocks, it may be a reservation under the terms of the legal precedents established.
Present occupants of the land may find themselves with a cloud on the land title.
Do they have the 300 years back taxes ready?
Taxes will be paid after the tenants pony up the 300 years back rent.
How could I be less concerned? Unless they both lost, I'll only be half-happy.
The liberals own the Hamptons. The Indians don't have a chance.
