Republican Senator Suggests Closing Gitmo

KEY WEST, Fla. - Sen. Mel Martinez said the Bush administration should consider closing the Guantanamo Bay prison for terrorism suspects - the first high-profile Republican to make the suggestion.

"It's become an icon for bad stories and at some point you wonder the cost-benefit ratio," Martinez said Friday. "How much do you get out of having that facility there? Is it serving all the purposes you thought it would serve when initially you began it, or can this be done some other way a little better?"

Martinez, who strongly supported Bush's efforts in Iraq during his campaign last year, also expressed concerns about progress in the war.

"I am discouraged by how long it has taken for us to begin to draw down some forces," Martinez, R-Fla., said at the annual Florida Society of Newspaper Editors/Florida Press Association convention.

"It brings home the importance of the decision to send men and women to go to war," he said. "It has become a foreign fighters' war against us there and the progress seems slow and difficult."

I know this is old news. VP Cheney said they weren't closing GITMO.

I posted this because I want to know if this is what we can expect from the "new wave" of Hispanic Republicans that, according to Borderless Bush, are "the future of our party".

Are they bunch of RINO's, or is it just this guy?

I don't see anything RINO in here. It's essentially what Bush said that they always review all options for the facility. It could have been worded better but it's the writer's opinion that he wants to close it, Mel is just asking an open question and the dutitfull fifth column MSM is eager for another Bush takedown.

This is just typical moronic "feel good" thinking. Sort of like last year's clamor to shut down Abu Gharib.

Unless we're going to RELEASE these terrorists, they will have to be housed SOMEWHERE. Gitmo is as good a place as any.

Why not stop fighting the war on terror altogether? That way we could ensure that no negative pr occurs vis-a-vis jihadists who want to kill us.

We have released many of them, back to their home countries. Many more are being charged and will be going on trial soon.

I am against holding people indefinately but if they are charging them and giving them trials then I see no problem with that.

Martinez is a joke.He is the worst Senator on the GOP side .
He has been in office since January and he screws up in a major way every week.

I have to think this has something to do with Mel Martinez is Cuban. From his website:

Mel Martinez came to Florida from his native Cuba at age 15 as a part of "Operation Peter Pan," a humanitarian program led by the Catholic Church that helped over 14,000 Cuban children escape Communist Cuba. Martinez lived with foster families for four years until he and his family were reunited in Orlando. When he arrived he came with only one suitcase, the clothes on his back and an enduring love of the game of baseball.

I am wondering if there might be some reason having to do he is virulently anti Castro for his stand. I don't know what it could be, though. He might not be saying.

Is there some disease floating around D.C. that strikes only Republicans and causes the backbone (and other parts of the male anatomy) to shrivel up and fall off?

I'm sure our other enemies, present and future, worldwide are smiling as they watch this country contort itself trying to play nice with those who would kill us. The list of useful idiots grows daily. Future enemies will have the playbook on how to break this country's will to fight before the first shots are fired.

Because he is a moron. This is what happens when we pick our candidates based on political expediency instead of conservatism.
