RE: Notice the anarchy symbol - these seem to go hand in hand.

Of note - it seems that many people who have been anarchists for a few years are increasingly attracted to National Bolshevism.

I have a theory that you can tell a lot about a country by its public restrooms, popular music, and graffiti:

I liked this one the best. "To summon turbo-hookers". I have no idea what it might mean, but it always makes my imagination run wild ;-)

A Daimler-Benz is sometimes called a Mers in Russian and Ukrainian, and there are still a lot of old Soviet-made Moskvich brands on the road, like this model 1500. A 'Merskvich' is a way to brag up your POS. This one has a bumper sticker reading 'Merskvich-Jet Fighter'. Notice that the license plate is Ukrainian, but he has a Russian flag sticker with Romanov double-eagle on trunk.

So, beyond this tired, worn out excuse, what are the real reasons?==

I saw it by my eyes. Russians was very disappointed that America bombed serbs.
I think it can be repaired if America today some kind to help Serbia to accqiure thier historical lands which she lot because of bombing. Kosovo.
People will tell taht America made mistake then corrected her. The respect will be higher then was.

Second thing is Iraq war. The explination of war was clumsy.
If pres Bush told to the world that America just needs to bring fight from her shores on turf of islamists then russians understand.
It is clever tactics. To create killing sack on turf of enemy the lure which attacts all scums from islamic world who want to fight americans to Iraq then do all kilings and distructions there. To create the "meat grinder" - how it called by russians.
Same time your own territory is safe. Perfect.

I explain Iraq war to my russian accquitants in that way. They understand.

So I'd say that american politicians has to explian themselves not only to fellow americans but to the world and do this much better. THEN the world appriciation will be better.

Ivan, I love reading your attempts to explain Russian culture and correct misconceptions (they are all godless commies) that all too many of us Americans have about the Russian people. I made a Russian friend last year who spoke five languages (smarter than most U.S. citizens)and happily spent his free time teaching me to read Russian and understand the culture. Having grown up on movies like "Red Dawn". I used to think like some of the blockheads that post their anti-Russian tripe, but now I don't. I would think that Condee could communicate our reasons to the Russian people.

Sorry for late reply ;-))

Were you a member of the Communist party?

Absolutely not!

I didn't say Russian. I think I referred to a Soviet. How manhy of the old Communists really changed?

Two points here. First, Soviet Union is not the same as Russia. Even talking about the past, there are many old die-hard Communists in Ukraine and all other former Soviet republics. However, American attitude to Ukraine is markedly different from that to Russia, despite many ex-Communists living there (with all the associated spots).

The second point. There are indeed many ex-communists and people with anti-western and very reactionary views. This is the burden of the Communist past. Russia is dealing with it. Using democratic mechanisms. Communists have been soundly defeated in the polls several times.

I think you opinion is more due to the old myth of Russian aggressiveness and empire building. This myth had been created by the British when the Russian empire became a competitor to the British. The myth goes, look at Muscovy in the 15th century and how it has expanded. Well, you may look at New England and how New England has expanded since. The US and Russian expansion has a very important feature that makes it completely different from British. People in the US and Russia came to live on the territories they expanded to. The British came as rulers, they never settle their empire. They never raised kids in India or other places. (except Canada and Australia which became Dominions and not parts of the Empire quite early).

Same as putting the stature of Stalin back up

Despite all the fuss here, only one stature of Stalin has been opened in a small town of Mirny in Yakutia and only because he was the leader of the USSR when the Allies defeated Nazism. Well, I do not support this decision but this is no reason of talking about Soviet restoration in Russia because of this one fact.

As for losing the cold war, the Soviets were outspent...most socialist and communist countries... still, out of habit, maintain other socialist policies which continue to violate fundamental rights. People need to realize that the policies and programs they have been lured into believing are necessary and proper for the state to maintain, such as; Social Security, public education, taxation, a central bank, regulation of industry, progressive income tax, capital gains tax, imminent domain confiscation and other tyrannies are simply failed socialist policies that are maintained because people are continuing to accept them because they have been indoctrinated into it in the past.

Well, it sounds like you are now trying to outspend EU and even Canada. In Canada we have ever increasing burden of health care in part because of spiraling Medicare costs in the US. Do you know that American cars are not competitive largely because each car has more than $3000 health care price tug attached?

It is a more common opinion that the USSR was outspent because it could not sustain growing arms race costs. This may be true to a point but it speaks largely about stupidity and impotence of the Soviet leadership and about nothing else.

In addition to what Ivan has said, the US never show real consideration of other peoples and interests. Quite understandably, this creates anti-American sentiments. Basically, America is not a threat to Russia or other countries but sometimes it is a bit hard to see it through all the rhetoric and fuss. If anything, I sympathize with you because many people just don't like your being strong and big and powerful much in the same way and for the same reasons as they despise Russia. However, if you walk in the woods and see a big big bear you cannot help but be uncomfortable. Of course the bear is friendly and all that but if it is up to something... I sympathize with you as I said and I think nothing can be done about that. Just get over it ;-))

No, that's True Sausage. The lard, on the other hand, looks too blue in spots.

But the important thing is, don't smoke. That could really cause disease.

I think, your picture is all truth.

I liked the juxtaposition of the walking matryoshka doll with 'Come to Marlboro country'. In the Kyiv metro there are all these 'taste the West' cigarette ads with Arizona panoramas that seem ironically out of place as well. And a picture of Churchill trying to get you to buy insurance or something.

I have picture of billboard with a half-naked woman extolling the virtues of a wine cooler in a lightbulb-shaped bottle, under the text 'Just screw it in'. On the street beneath the billboard is another of the ubiquitous Ukrainian grannies.

It's a bit racey for a family forum like ours, though ;-)

Given the destruction of three-generation family in the US, I think they should hold the brides and export grannies instead. I am paying $30 per dinner out for a teenage babysitter so that she can watch the TV in my living room, then another $25/week for Russian lessons for my daughter.

Damn social security.

Yes, that's true. When I describe how the average middle-class American family is spread out over many states, Russians shudder.

Not every babulya is safe to leave around the kids, though. I knew at least three that needed to be locked up. They may have seem too much history for one person to cope with.
