Googled the risk from the "P" vaccine.

Encephalopathy leading to permanent neurological damage.

Here's a link.

It hit our County (rural) last winter and the local hosp. closed the Maternity ward to all visitors.

Over the Coast range in the next County the hospital that we all travel to for specialist medical care also closed it's maternity ward to all visitors.

Seemed like it hit over there first if IRC.

The risk is very very rare.
From the CDC:

"Mild Problems (Common)
• Fever (up to about 1 child in 4)
• Redness or swelling where the shot was given (up to
about 1 child in 4)
• Soreness or tenderness where the shot was given (up
to about 1 child in 4)
These problems occur more often after the 4th and 5th
doses of the DTaP series than after earlier doses.
Sometimes the 4th or 5th dose of DTaP vaccine is
followed by swelling of the entire arm or leg in which
the shot was given, lasting 1-7 days (up to about 1
child in 30).
Other mild problems include:
• Fussiness (up to about 1 child in 3)
• Tiredness or poor appetite (up to about 1 child in 10)
• Vomiting (up to about 1 child in 50)
These problems generally occur 1-3 days after the shot.
Moderate Problems (Uncommon)
• Seizure (jerking or staring) (about 1 child out of
14,000)
• Non-stop crying, for 3 hours or more (up to about
1 child out of 1,000)
• High fever, over 105oF (about 1 child out of
16,000)
Severe Problems (Very Rare)
• Serious allergic reaction (less than 1 out of a million
doses)
• Several other severe problems have been reported
after DTaP vaccine. These include:
- Long-term seizures, coma, or lowered consciousness
- Permanent brain damage.
These are so rare it is hard to tell if they are caused
by the vaccine.

Part of the problem is American parents not doing their job of immunizing their kids and then you have the anti vaccine Moms who add to the problem.

The schools here in Oregon had to go start refusing kids due to lack of parental compliance. And they even had free vaccines.

I agree with you.
I am for border control but ya can't blame everything on illegals.

When my son was a teen he was revacinated and that was ten plus years ago.

Last I heard in our area all kids entering Jr. high get the Hepatis vaccine, can't remember the strain.

That's what my pediatrician told me, when my son was small.

Like I said, that was 17 years ago, and we had the pertussis with the DT but I can't tell you the number of people I know who opted out of that vaccine.

Now, as to a booster DPT, my son just had shots to go on a trip out of the country. The county health department gave him a booster DT, it did not contain "P".

You'd think since this is going on, county health departments would be alerted and when they had the chance, if a booster was needed, would include the pertussis.

It was being put out in the media that severe reactions were leading to Autism and severe brain damage.

Something came out that we were getting our vaccine from Japan and there was a quality control issue allowing "bad" doses slip by.

Truth to it all I dunno.

Hep B is required for admission to public school.

We opted out of Hep B because it is not communicable other than through sex, blood transfusion, or drugs (shared needles.)

My son entered college without a Hep B vaccine, no problem, they just wanted to make sure he had MMR and DPT.

He has had Hep A since he's made several trips out of the country to third world places and Hep A is the kind of hepatitis you can get from food.

My son had SEVERE febrile convulsions after the second immunization, so our pediatrician advised against any more. He received the rest of his immunizations without the Pertussis, just receiving the Diptheria and Tetanus.

We lived out of the country (Grand Cayman) when my kid entered school and he had to have a vaccine called the BCG.

My pediatrician in the States had a fit, but it wasn't an option, so we had it. Supposedly, it protected kids from TB. But the consequence is, that he'll always test positive on a TB test, so if they were to suspect he had TB, he'd have to have an x-ray, not rely on the skin test.

I don't think it has a lifetime immunity. They used to give it to all schoolkids in Britain. Don't know if they still do.

It was similar to the small pox vaccine in that it leaves a scar on your upper arm.

I guess unless you are absolutely positive your teen is not having sex on the sly.

I am not speaking of you and your family directly.

I am talking about those who are sure their teen is following house rules.

My son has had emerg blood and was very ill we just recently had him screened for Hepatitis A,B,C and new strains of B1, K (don't know the exact letter as the Dr. explained there is strains shooting of strains now being found due to advances in science to see them) ect...due to a his liver acting up. This is years after his transfusions as he has had them post op on several diff occasions.

Thank God he was clean. His Dr. sent his samples to the State to be done instead of the local lab.

We had more problems with A in our community restaurants years ago before the Hispanic population showed up. It was drifters who would work for the summer and had unsanitary habits along with health problems.

Interesting. BCG is standard in Japan also, but they don't force children who might live in the U.S. to have it.

I've explained the risks factors for Hep B to my son.

The reason we opted out, is because I have MS, and there is quite a bit of research being conducted into a possible implication between Hep B vaccine and MS.

Since they're not sure of the cause of MS, and since I developed the disease after I had a Hep B (in order to work in the healthcare profession), we decided to wait out the Hep B.

The "genetic" side of the risk of MS is sketchy, but there is some risk, and since the latest theory is "triggers" may bring on the disease, we've opted out of Hep B.

The Caymanian government wasn't as understanding, LOL.

But this was 12 years ago. Their policy might have changed.

[New York] In Oneida County health officials are investigating eight reported cases of pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

Officials say the reports of the contagious disease have come over the last two weeks.

Of the eight cases, four involve students in the Whitesboro School District. The other four cases involve adults, two of which work for the New Hartford School District.

Health officials say these recent cases top the total number of cases in the county for all of last year. "I wouldn't call it a large outbreak but it's certainly something that we're going to keep an eye on and again we've notified area physicians so that they in turn are alerted to the pertussis situation and they would report cases as they seem them," explained Ken Fanelli of the Oneida County Health Department.

Whitesboro school officials say parents in the district have been notified.

A new vaccine to fight the disease could be approved in the U-S later this month.

[Arizona] ..................Adolescents who were immunized as children become susceptible to whooping cough because the vaccine’s effectiveness begins to wane after several years, said Doug Campos-Outcalt, the county’s interim health officer.

Because the condition seems like nothing more than a persistent cough, many children and adults get whooping cough but are never diagnosed, he said.

Either they don’t go to the doctor, or their physician does not test for pertussis.

As a result, the number of pertussis cases in Arizona is vastly under-reported, Engelthaler said. "We know we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg."

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recently approved the use of a pertussis booster in adolescents, which will be available to health care providers this month. The state health department, which has ordered the vaccine and will make it available to county health departments, recommends that doctors vaccinate adolescents who have contact with infants inside the home, and who have not had a tetanus shot in the last five years. The new pertussis booster is given with vaccines for diphtheria and tetanus.

Dr. Mary Rimsza, a pediatrician practicing in Phoenix, said she plans to begin vaccinating adolescents for pertussis once the vaccine is available.

"It will help them, prevent them from getting (pertussis), but the most critical benefit is if we immunize this population, they’re not going to spread it to infants," she said.

Babies cough so hard from pertussis they can die from ruptured blood vessels in the brain, suffocation from mucus they can’t cough up or pneumonia, Auxier said.

"They cough their brain out, literally," he said. "It’s a horrible death."

Ray said she wishes her son had been vaccinated from pertussis, but she’s glad she knew the signs of whooping cough.

"If these babies are dying from it, I think children should be vaccinated," she said. .....................

[Australia] Health authorities are warning Western Australians to get vaccinated against the highly infectious disease whooping cough, with last year the most severe on record.

More than 2,000 cases of whooping cough were reported across the state last year.

The outbreak began in the Great Southern, with hundreds of cases also reported in other regions.

The health department's Tony Watson says despite this year expected to be far less severe, parents are still being advised to be prepared.

"The primary focus at the moment will be to get the high school kids who weren't vaccinated last year to have a booster, but we're also paying very close attention to the vaccination of parents with newborn children," he said.

It still doesn't explain how a person immunized against this could get it. Insofar as I know babies still have to get the shot against this.

I am assuming if you have been vaccinated (DPT) it lasts your lifetime, I could be wrong about this. The problem is that lots and lots of people have have opted out of getting vaccinations and the boosters for their children because of a variety of reasons. When my children were very young, in the early 80s, Dr. Mendelssohn (I think was his name) was a very popular pediatrician (he had written several books), perhaps he was/is a good pediatrician but I remember he would caution parents (some of them were my friends), that the vaccination for DTP was responsible for some other child-hood condition (I forget which) and so the risk was too great to have them immunized. Perhaps as a result of his advice in England there was a terrible outbreak of Whooping cough taking the lives of many children. At that time lots of pediatricians were hiding the cause of death from parents because (this was the excuse used in the documentary), the terrible guilt the parents were having because they hadn't gotten their children immunized. How much Mendelssohn had to do with the situation I am not sure but, he was certainly demonized by the media on this side of the pond and some doctors I knew. Our chidlren were vaccinated as my husband was in the medical field at that time. We made the decision to vaccinate our children and have never regretted it. However, I do know some who have had problems.

I also suspect that there is a growing population of those who have no memory of large desease outbreaks and just don't bother having their children vaccinated. Because many of the children who get truly sick with whooping cough are very young, not school age, they probably are the ones mom and dad are ignoring.

Well it has to be a personal choice for sure in wieghing out the risks.

I don't care for the flu shot but being in the healthcare mode myself it is frowned upon if ya don't.

As for other meds. we go buy the rule if a new med is on the market less than 7yrs all the side effects have not come to surface.

Best not to ingest anything pharmacudical unless it is needed to sustain life. That is family mode.

Diet, excercise, reduced stress and lotsa water have turned many of our health issues around before getting out of hand and we learned that the hard way growing up.

About the time, my son was born, 17 years ago, parents started opting out on the "pertussis vaccine.

I remember in 1980 it was an issue as well so, I wonder when certain "experts" began telling mothers that the risks of immunization were too great, the 60's perhaps?
