This is another intramural tempest in a teapot, sort of like Laura Bush's off-color jokes last month, which generated several dozen threads and thousands of posts on FR. As far as I am concerned, if the Republicans can deliver with regard to the Federal courts, including the Supreme Court, and seriously cut domestic spending and taxes, I can overlook the issue of inviting this woman to an official function. However, the results to date of this administration in furthering conservative goals of any sort on the domestic front have not been good.

What Fred Phelps does is reprehensible, as is what Mary Carey does. I am willing to cut the GOP some slack and forgive a mistake or two on the guest list at a fundraiser if the party seriously promoted conservative goals. However, I see no effort to cut domestic spending nor any serious attempt to prune back Federal regulation or intervention. What happened to goals such as eliminating the Departments of Education and Energy, or to end Federal funding to PBS and the National Endowment for the Arts? Furthermore, the GOP blinked with regard to the ending of the Democrats' filibuster of judicial nominees.

We would all do better in insisting on the promotion of a conservative agenda than on poor dinner party choices.
