He died because he chose to. Exactly. The Lord Jesus Christ gave His life for the sheep exactly as He said He would. He also said "Greater love hath no man than this than he gives his life for his friends". Jesus did this very deliberately on the cross. He gave up his life right according to the Father's plan.
It was the only atonement that could cover the sins of folks like you and me.

Rightly said. His sacrifice was for all mankind, even those whom we may think do not deserve to be saved such as people we see every day like extremist Muslims who take innocent lives. If they were to truly seek Him, find Him and allow Him to come in through the door of their heart, they would be just as saved as you and I. I am thinking that many people forget this fact. Instead we want to exact revenge on them, instead of pray for them to be healed spiritually.
Matthew 5:44 (New International Version)
44But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
For when you allow God to take control of your life, that is when true change takes place. So lets pray for our enemy, that God will soften their callous hearts and uncover their eyes to the truth of His salvation.
