Holloway Not Only American Missing In Aruba
The Hawaii Channel.com ^ | June 7, 2005

Another family said they know exactly what the parents of Natalee Holloway, the Alabama teenager who has been missing in Aruba since last week, are going through. They've been dealing with the same nightmare for seven years. The Bradleys, of Virginia, went on a cruise in 1998 and Aruba was one of the stops. That's where their daughter disappeared.

Scary. I took my little family there for a vacation a number of years ago and it seemed like a 'small town' island that would be safe. Maybe it's proximity to So. America makes it a jumping off point for some pretty heinous crimes. Awful. I feel sorry for these families and their daughters.

"I took my little family there for a vacation a number of years ago and it seemed like a 'small town' island that would be safe."

I'm sure it is. Things like this happen everywhere, this place just happens to be in the news right now.

Things like this happen everywhere...

From the article: "The officer told the FBI he went to a brothel in Curac'l on Canal. He said an American girl leaned in and said: "My name is Amy Bradley. I need your help."

Things like this do not happen everywhere!

There was a couple on DirecTV - not sure if it was FNC or CNN - earlier last night.

They said their young son disappeared on Aruba several years ago.

He was never found.

I believe one of three local men questioned about this current missing girl is the son of a local Judge.

Parents seem to equate traveling to far off islands with going to the Senior Prom and staying out late.

I hope all theses previously unpublicized disappearances cause a serious dropoff of tourism to Aruba.

from your link...

.. However, she did confirm reports of a sighting by a Naval officer one year after the woman disappeared. The officer told the FBI he went to a brothel in Curac'l on Canal. He said an American girl leaned in and said: "My name is Amy Bradley I need your help." Unfortunately he didn't report the sighting for some time and by then the brothel had burned to the ground.

<wide-eyed>
wtf ??

Yeah. I keep reading this too. It seems like urban legend. If someone told you that, wouldn't you report it and try to help?

It seems like urban legend

Unless there's lots more to it than stated in the article, it sounds like that 'officer' needs a good ass kickin'.

Yeah, I'd like to think I'd at least have taken the girl for a walk and listened to her story...

The parents were interviewed on msnbc last night & said the navy chief didn't report it right away:
1) because the brothel was off limits
2) because he didn't know anything about the girl being missing until he say her story in a magazing after he got out of service....he did contact authorities at that time.

Can anyone spell "Sex slavery"? This stuff has gone on around the world for, well, ever. It seems to me that more stories are now appearing in the news about it.

I agree with you, however, that things like this do not happen everywhere.

I'm thinking the same thing. A lot of us associate "white slavery" with the 1920's & 30s ala Thouroughly Modern Milly, not with current time. But, we keep hearing the horror stories of foriegn women (and children!) being lured into the sex trades so why do we think this couldn't happen to us?

The interview with the parents of Amy was really chilling....I hope somehow they get her back.

I've been thinking the same thing for a couple of days. If this story had come out of Thailand, it would have been my first guess. But I just never associated sex slavery with the Caribbean.

I've been thinking about it too but more on the cases in the States. Remembering the abductions where the victim is recovered it seems the young girl from Salt Lake City was a prisoner of just the kidnapper.

Remember the young boy who spent years with his abuser and had the courage to go to the police when he (abuser) brought another really little kid "home".

It's horrible enough to hear about those, but even more to think that some of the others who are missing may be forced to be prostitutes.

Continued prayers for Miss Natalee Holloway. May she make it home in time to begin school this Fall in Tuscaloosa.

This article gives me hope that she is alive, and maybe someone will put enough pressure on that the perps will be discovered. I wonder how many other girls have disappeared that we don't know about. I'm sure American girls aren't the only ones.

No, things like this do happen everywhere. Small towns are not Paradise, nor are small islands. All you need is one Evil Person to wreak havoc. Which is the default mode of life here on earth. And that EP could just be passing through that area. And because the area 'looks' like Paradise, people let down their guard.
