Rumsfeld warns China on lack of democracy

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld warned on Friday that China's failure to match economic freedoms with democratic reforms could raise tensions and undermine its growing influence in the world.

On way to a regional security conference that is expected to focus on China and North Korea, Rumsfeld drew a stark contrast between China and India, the world's largest democracy, which America is courting as a counter-weight to the communist nation.

"We anticipate that the relationship with India will continue to be strengthened. With respect to China, it's not completely clear which way they are going because you have the tension I characterised between the nature of their political system and the nature of their economic system," he told reporters.

But Rumsfeld also said he is making plans for his first visit to China as Pentagon chief later this year.

Rapidly improving U.S.-India ties are driven largely by relations between the two militaries, while the Pentagon's ties with China's army, badly damaged by the EP-3 surveillance plane incident in April 2001, are just now "evolving again in a way that's appropriate for the times," Rumsfeld said.

He also said the administration was re-examining its policy toward North Korea, which in February announced it possessed nuclear weapons and may be preparing a nuclear weapons test.

Rumsfeld gave no details but another senior U.S. official, asked how much to make of the comment, told Reuters: "A lot."

1] That is a sideshow to the main theme of my posts. That theme is we should not be lecturing China (or Russia) about democracy since our "leaders" have trashed our national sovereignty and those two nations have not, and

2] I do not have the luxury of picking and choosing subs. I had to settle on a contractor.

Besides, I do not know what illegals are doing work out at shops, e.g., the trusses that come by truck that were put together at their shop. I never saw those workers.

It is not up to me to stop an invasion of our borders. That is up to the President and Bush has failedl to do that.

I'm not trying to sound high-horse and snotty, btw, which is how that probably came across--it's just that I have learned from painful experience that all contractors need to spell out, to the letter, every single bit of work they will be doing and WHO will be doing it.

I don't know about how the contracting laws work where you are, but you might want to call your state's office of Immigration and Naturalization. Get the contractor's ass in a sling, if you can. Don't trust the govt to do a damn thing about the problem of illegals--clearly, they won't. If enough of us start making some noise, real noise, alerting authorities to when and where illegals are working in a manner timely enough for them to have a chance of reacting, who knows? Is it worth a phone call?

Here in Michigan, btw, the contractor would be required to fulfill any and all agreed upon duties at the agreed upon price. If that means that (were your contractor to get busted) your contractor would be forced to hire legal workers and finish the contract at a loss...well, that would be icing on the cake.

Our leaders our insane. The insanity of the destruction of our national sovereignty is only exceeded by the pathetic apathy of American citizens who sit by and only mildly bitch about it.

Right, and the minutement are a hoax /sarcasm

they will fight as tenaciously as any army on earth because the people have pride in their nation

Only because they are brainwashed and their government filters nearly all media out. What do you think Radio Free Europe was for in the cold war?

I will agree that our leaders are gutless regarding the border but if you hate our country so much why dont you MOVE to china? no one is stopping you.

How lame and shallow your post was!

1] All decent Americans are proud of the Minutemen. However, this represents a fraction of the people as a whole. I stated Americans are apathetic, and the fact that the invasion continues proves that not enough Americans are showing sufficient outrage; if they had, the "leaders" would be engaging the Mexicans at the border and rounding up the Mexicans already here illegally.

2] Re the patriotic nationalism the Chinese have . . . the end result is they have it, and Americans (by and large) do not. The Chinese protect their national sovereignty, and the American "leaders" do not.

3] Telling someobody "they hate their country" is an old childish rant from message boards past. You should be above this. What I do hate is our politicians, and I do hate apathetic Americans. I love the nation of the past, America as it once as--America that made our Founding Fathers proud. There is little to like about present day America as we have tossed the Constitution and we trash our national sovereignty more and more.

Any decent American who "loves today's America" is as foolish and brainwashed as an inner-city public school illiterate.

Decent Americans should love the America of past and should be fighting to regain the principles this nation was founded on, not that they were original, but that they were just and right.

You have a hard time swallowing the truth. You probably will celebrate the 4th of July, even though we no longer have independence (we are tax slaves to the ever growing percentage of nontaxpayers) and the Constitution has been incinerated and our nation refuses to fight a war at our borders; yet, you will celebrate the 4th of July, correct?

You will serve your nation better if you wake up and start being realistic. There is a lot to hate about today's America and a lot to love about the America our Founding Fathers gave us. You should be fighting to reclaim our once great nation, not pretending everything is fine when we have become a socialist nation.

On point of thread, again, we have no right to be lecturing China about "democracy" since they have a patriotic intensity we can't compete with, and they guard their borders and protect their national sovereignty. We have trashed our national sovereignty and a high percnetage of people in this nation know nothing, have been taught nothing and could care less about national pride.

And we are lecturing them? Again, they should be lecturing us.

And all your posts were lame and shallow. First you say it is our leaders job then you lash out at Americans in general. You sound like a DUmmie.

Wrong about China and its borders. Their problem with North Korea's border is equally severe as ours with Mexico. Only a DUmmie could overlook that fact.

Hating the country? Well you are the one who refuses to do anything about the contractor whose illegal immigrant workers are working on your house and then blames Americans for being apethatic. After all no one said you had to hire a contractor to work on you house. My family and I have done it all by ourselves and that gives us a sense of pride. You should look into that.

I love America. As I stated before I agree that our leaders are gutless and agree that our soverignty is in peril, but dont blame everyone for it.

If you think China's system is better, then why aren't you out there trying to make it happen? Like I said, no one is stopping you.

From #16:

As I sit her and write this, there are 11 illegal aliens in my yard working on a new addition to my home.

From #73

I stated Americans are apathetic, and the fact that the invasion continues proves that not enough Americans are showing sufficient outrage...What I do hate is our politicians, and I do hate apathetic Americans.

Well, you have outrage and apathy. What does that make you? A special class of patriot?

Outrage is meaningless unless it is coupled with action. I do not, for one moment, buy into your "but I had to settle on a contractor" story. What did you do, go with the cheapest bid? Is the work that the 11 illegals you hired necessary work? You have the right to complain about the government just as soon as you stop giving them the green light in ignoring our open borders.

What did you do, go with the cheapest bid?

I got three bids--$58,000, $62,000 and $82,000. I went with the HIGHEST bid, $82,000.

The moral is--never assume. If you think the homeowner gets breakdowns of subcontractors' employees records from their main contractor, you are as wild-eyed and whacky as . . .
