I was one of two finalists in my 8th grade spelling bee. The final word was "sequence". I spelled it "sequins" because they wouldn't give me a definition.
I still think I should have gotten the title.

Bursting into tears, eighth-grader Anurag Kashyap (search) of California became the U.S. spelling champ Thursday,Imagine the media comments had Anurag been a homeschooler....."can't handle pressure"....."needs to get out more"......blah blah blah.
That said, congrats to him and the others. By the way it's interesting to note that the top 3 are all Indian.

I guess if he can spell his own name, he can spell anything, lol.

Some of the words seemed particularly easy. Strange indeed. And using a proper word, the name of a medicine?

I like how FoxNews always mentions when achieving kids have been homeschooled. Kudos! Look in vain for such a mention in the MSM reports.

Finola Hackett, a seventh-grader in Tofield, Alberta, mastered "whiffet," a small or unimportant person. Could you use that in a sentence please....
"Whiffet Jefferson Clinton was a national embarassment."

It would seem like knowledge of Latin and Greek would be most useful in such a contest, as well as familiarity with basic phonology.

Appparently, the two remaining spellers went round after round after round w/o being able to determine a winner.
The judges eventually decided upon a tie-breaker, whereby one student had to spell their opponent's name....
Congrats to all the participants!
