NYP: '08: DUELING DYNASTIES?
New York Post ^ | May 31, 2005 | John Podhoretz

Posted on 05/31/2005 5:20:21 AM PDT by OESY

Let me build the perfect 2008 Republican candidate for you. He would be a governor, because recent history demonstrates the nearly insuperable advantage governors (Carter, Reagan, Clinton and Bush the Younger) have when it comes to running for president.

He would be from a populous state, because his success there statewide might win him 10 percent of the electoral-college votes he would need on Election Day.

He would have to be acceptable to social conservatives with resolute stands on social issues like abortion, because the Bush victory in 2004 demonstrated the importance of being able to bring evangelical churchgoers to the polls. But in manner and style he should be easygoing, in order to undercut the ability of Democrats and the mainstream media to paint him as a crazed extremist.

He should have particular appeal to Hispanics, because (again) the Bush 2004 victory was built in part on pulling Hispanic voters away from the Democratic Party. And he should probably have Southern credentials, because the GOP has to be able to rely on the votes of the solid South to prevail in the Electoral College.

Fortunately for the GOP, there is a dream candidate that fits all these categories and more. But remember, nightmares are dreams too. And the candidate described here is, nightmarishly, the brother of the current president and the son of the president two guys back.

It has been the common presumption of political analysts that Jeb Bush of Florida couldn't possibly be the Republican nominee....

With a candidate named Bush running against a Democrat whose name was anything other than Clinton, Democrats would be able to win almost solely on the grounds that America shouldn't be a hereditary monarchy. But with a candidate named Clinton, Democrats would lose that issue against Jeb Bush....

Two other options that don't fit John Podhoretz's model:

Fred Thompson

Laura Bush - Can you imagine her against Hillary? HRC would get creamed!

Cheney could not overcome the public perception that his health is fragile, and that he is one step away from death's door.

If its Cheney-Rice, here's Cheney's best approach to the age and health rap: "Well, if something went wrong and I did not survive the full term in office, I would still be certain of something very important: my successor would be a great president."

Laura is too sweet. She doesn't have the chutzpah for the political world. Especially a carnivore like Hildabeast.

Now Barbara Bush (GWB's mother), she'd kick ass and take names. Washington and the world would be changed.

Like it or not.

I like Fred Thompson. He seems like he'd have the testicular fortitude to say what needs to be said, and get things done.

Better Fred than Red :)

PS I think that Laura is a lot stronger than HRC. She just doesn't have the personal emotional need to engage in a display in a public arena.

I would join a third party if Laura was the nominee. She is way to the left of her Husband and we have huge FISCAL problems coming up . WE must have a TRUE conservative in 2008!

Sigh, but she would be an improvement over the Stalin wannabe.

Seems we have a growing Equestrian Class in this country. The Senators seem to think so at any rate.

Remember...i42 would never reveal his medical records (in detail) and then he winds up being a heart case (and a STD carrier if the truth be known). At least with Cheney we would know the whole truth. Beside, he would be 'backstopped' by one very sharp, and very healthy Rice.

I doubt Jeb, Dick, and Rice is going to win (I think Jeb or Rice will be the vp choice.) I think it going to come down to Allen, Mitt, McCain, and Newt as a wild card. (Frist will be out early I feel after losing S.C to Allen, Mitt and McCain will split Michign/N.H with each winning won and Newt will place a lot of second and thrid's early on since he going to be the one putting force the big ideas in the campign. Rudy, Patitki, Chuck, ect... Should fade early with a couple dropping out before Iowa even. My guess it will be Allen to lose with supersouthern tuesday, but if Mitt or McCain win both Mighign and N.H then they have a chance thanks to the winner takes all open C.A primany we have now (Thanks Arnie.)

Your candidates of choice have a common problem...they're senators. What senator (besides the one that JFK's daddy bought him) has managed to find his way to the White House?

Allen is a great guy, with a chance to win over the conservative base, Romney is another good guy but he's from Taxachusettes, and McLaim is done - the base will not vote that POS into anything - national (although he may run as a demonRAT).
