Libertarian talk radio surges in New Hampshire
Free State Project ^ | Me

Not sure how much to read into this...but in the 9 months since I moved to New Hampshire I've noticed a lot of changes in the talk radio culture, mostly positive for local freedom lovers.

When I first got here to Keene in late August '04, there was apparently only one local libertarian talk show in the state - Gardner Goldsmith's program airing 3-6PM weekdays on WGIR-AM. Now he airs an extra hour each day, and his signal reaches about half the homes in the state.

Southwestern New Hampshire's main radio station had no local libertarian show last year, but now libertarian Eric Scott is on from 10AM-11:30AM every weekday.

Free Talk Live, the syndicated show run by Free Staters was a nearly unknown Internet show when I moved here. Now it airs on two radio stations in New Hampshire and one in Mass; the Mass signal reaches southern NH. Though not technically a local show, Free Talk Live discusses New Hampshire issues on nearly every broadcast (six nights a week 8-10PM EST). These guys are hardcore libertarians and field a lot of calls from New Hampshire residents which air in about 10 markets around the nation.

During the same 9 month time period one major socialist show (Arnie Arneson's) has gone off the air in Concord...though it's still airing in the northern part of the state. The "Bureaucrat Doctor" show - where a local government physician answers questions - has been cut in half on WKBK in Keene. Other things have probably happened that I don't know about, but these are just the changes I'm aware of as a listener.

It's not clear to what extent this minor sea change is connected to the Free State Project (www.FreeStateProject.org), which selected New Hampshire as a target for libertarian migration about two years ago. So far about 150 liberty activists are thought to have moved here, with another 6,500 pledged to follow. This *has* had a disproportionate impact on call-ins to NH talk radio...with more and more freedom activists each "liberating" a few minutes a day on talk shows around the state.

I would be a libertarian if it was not for their lack of patriotism and being for strong isolationism.

...and their lax immigration platform. I feel the same way.

I've really lost interest in what the Libertarians have to say following September 11th. They blew it, and in a big way. They no longer receive donations from me and will not unless they dump the isolationist refuse from their leadership.

Liberatarians are a fringe of the right.

Neal Boortz is a libertarian, but they still have just a little too much tin hat in their repertoire.

What do you mean, "strong isolationalism"?

"Libertarians are a fringe of the right."

No, not really. Their agenda fits nicely on the left (open borders, drugs for everyone, George Soros' agenda.)

Who listens to WGIR between 3-6 PM? We're all listening to Howie Carr on WRKO.

The Libertarians are more conservative on economics and freedom of the individual than the Republicans.Just look at the ludicrous scenarios of the Senate of late!

However, they are totally off base on defense of the country and other isolationist perspectives.
By the way NOBODY is taking a reality stand on illegal immigration! If the minutemen ran for Senate, they would have my vote!

I agree their stands on illegal immigration & defense are ridiculous. However, if you look at other countries that are NOT fighting an absurd, counter productive and futile "war on drugs" they are doing pretty darned good. Amsterdam is not the debacle everyone predicts will happen if we legalize drugs. Actually, if you take out the Muslims, its a lot safer than LA, etc.

No, not really. Personal responsibility is a big part of libertarianism. Something that is sorely lacking in both the democratic and republican parties. The l's aren't interested in micromanaging your life as long as you aren't depriving anyone of life, liberty or property through force or fraud.

Personal responsibility to keep those borders wide open and keep the dope flowing? Right!

Why don't you research their platform before spouting off? It makes you appear just a little more intelligent.

The premise behind open borders is that free people should be allowed to travel unencumbered. If it were not for our vast welfare state put into place by republicans and democrats, immigrants would have no reason to be here unless they wanted to legally work. We already have open borders. At least under a liberarian government, the people coming here wouldn't be freeloading at the expense of taxpayers.

I know what they stand for. Perhaps you would care to justify how it will be fine for most of the world to pour into this country just because they want to. Or maybe you can tell me how this would be a better place to live with drugs in vending machines available to all. When you answer those two questions then you can justify the the people who run the party hooking up with the Democrats and the Greens in Ohio after the last election.

There was a time not all that long ago (early 90's) when I thought perhaps the Libertarians had potential, but after doing some serious research I discovered what they really are as they pretend to wish to return the country to what it was founded on. The Libertarians IMO are nothing but an amoral bunch of lefties who don't want to admit to being Democrats.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion. You are mistaken about immigration. The Republican policies supported by President Bush cause more problems immigrants than a libertarian policy would. Of course, you'll never admit that in a million years.

As for the drugs, let me ask you a question. If drugs were legalized tomorrow, would you suddenly become a crack addict?

No, I would not become a crack-head - it's not my drug of choice, but I'm sure I would be lining up at the vending machine for some dope to smoke and maybe something to shoot once in awhile. I have not touched a thing in 20 yrs. but if they legalize it, you're going to be amazed at how many people who used to have "drug problems" indulge again. I got very very straight because I could not afford to be arrested and lose my license to make a living, not because I didn't like it.
