What is the rationale behind allowing you to move every stick of furniture in your house on the Sabbath, but not allowing you to go outside the house with a handkerchief in your pocket?

What is the rationale behind allowing you to move every stick of furniture in your house on the Sabbath, but not allowing you to go outside the house with a handkerchief in your pocket? The rationale is that your house is a reshut hayachid (private dwelling) while the street is a reshut ha'rabim (public place) and one is not allowed to carry in a public place.
As for moving around every stick of furniture in the house, nobody does that.

You may not carry items from the private domain into the public and vice versa.
