I can’t find my owners manual for my GE Spectra oven. I wanted to run the self-cleaning cycle. I went to the GE website and downloaded the manual. I noticed one of the sections was "Sabbath mode". Interesting.

Let's hope G*d has no problems with the massive energy wastage described above.

Seems awfully silly to me; some people have way too much time on their hands.

If you want to adhere to such ancient rituals and lifestyles, why have electricity or indoor plumbing at all? I'm guessing the Amish don't have such craziness with their cooking equipment.

On the Sabbath, a gas flame or electric heat may not be initiated, adjusted or turned off.

So if you happen to be warming a bottle for the baby as the Sabbath roles around you can't even turn off the flame?

Does the fire marshal know about this?

What do the Islam models do, Blow Up when an affront to Islam is spoken?

My new Amana comes with "Sabbath mode" but I still use the old "blech" (tin cover) over my gas cooktop.

I have no comment, other than I like the term "blech."

Do the refrigerators have a Sabbath mode as well? Wouldn't you want the light to stay off when you open the door, otherwise you'd be turning the light on and off (causing work for the invisible penguin who lives in the crisper drawer).

When I was in Israel I stayed in a hotel whose elevators had a special "Sabbath" mode. As far as I could tell, on the Sabbath, the elevator automatically went up and down, stopping at each floor, so that people could ride it without pressing any buttons.

I work for Whirlpool, and I can tell you that "Sabbath mode", has been a standard in the appliance industry for years. It is nothing new...looks like one company just wants to emphasize, for marketing purposes, something the industry has been doing for a long time.

1) What does this: "The glass electric cooktops cannot be kashered for Passover" mean?

2) What's with the "blech"? Is that a means of reminding folks not to use the burner, or a way of using the burner that stays within the "no work on Sabbath" rule?

Here's a thought- What if a microwave or oven has an auto-time feature? Couldn't an observant Jew get around the rules by programming it the day before to come on and turn off on its own during the Sabbath?

Every major cooking appliance has a sabbath mode, and has had one for some time. Orthodox Jews need cooked food, too.

Here is the skinny, am an orthodox jew and have one of these stoves. On the sabbath we cant turn on or shut off a stove. The stoves today have a safety mechanism that turn off the stove if it is left on for more than 12 hours. Since our sabbath is basically 25 hours (from basically right before sundown on friday til after sundown sat night.) Also, some stoves lights go on when they open the door. In the sabbbath mode the light stays on constantly, since turning on a light is prohibited on the sabbath.

Also, as far a refrigerators go, we unscrew the light bulb on friday afternoon so we can open up the refrigerator on the sabbath.

Speaking from (almost) complete ignorance, it would seem that many religions have restrictions on performing certain tasks or using technology on the Sabbath.

Putting out products with "Sabbath mode" to willfully circumvent the touching of the controls seems awfully silly, and most likely seems so to G-d as well.
