Mexican president criticized for racial remark

By Morgan Lee

The Associated Press

MEXICO CITY - President Vicente Fox came under criticism Saturday after saying Mexicans were willing to take jobs "that not even blacks want to do in the United States."

Fox's remark on Friday came a day after Mexico announced it would formally protest recent U.S. immigration overhauls, including extending walls along the border and making it harder for illegal migrants to get driver's licenses.

"There's no doubt that the Mexican men and women -- full of dignity, willpower and a capacity for work -- are doing the work that not even blacks want to do in the United States," Fox told a meeting of the Texas-Mexico Frozen Food Council in the western city of Puerto Vallarta on Friday.

The Mexican newspaper Milenio cited "Vicente Fox's racist comment" in a front-page headline, while the newspaper Reforma called the president's words "controversial."

The Rev. Jesse Jackson told CNN that the comments were "unwitting, unnecessary and inappropriate."

Fox issued a written statement Saturday night expressing his "enormous respect for minorities."

The president "laments and demonstrates his disagreement with interpretations that accuse his comments of being racist," the statement read. "The purpose of the remarks was nothing else but to make clear the importance that the Mexican workers have today in the development and progress of U.S. society."

They'll take jobs that even a caveman doesn't want to do.

Well at least he's apologised. I'm waiting to hear the Clintons and Ted Kennedy apologise...not holding my breath though.

I've often thought that illegal immigration would be an issue, that played right, could siphon off union members and blacks from the DNC-Soros party.

An apology ISN'T ENOUGH. Why isn't the NAACP outraged and demanding that V Fox take sensitivity classes, do community service and otherwise lick their boots?

What part of ILLEGAL is it that that is not understood.

Economics 101 supply and demand. No illegals and there is no one to fill the jobs, no labor and employers are forced to raise wages, higher wages more demand for the positions. You can't fool mother nature and you can't fool economic laws no matter how hard you try. Socialists and Communists have found this out.

Proves even Vicente views his own citizens along with black citizens as less than zero. When someone tells you who they are believe them!

I'm not sure that's an apology.

This is like the fourth post of this story of the past hour and a half. We should consolidate the discussion.

I HATE those non-apologies. Can't anybody just say "I'm sorry" anymore?

An immature observation: Vicente Fox looks like James Garner (Rockford, not your mayor) and the Ortega salsa guy had a mutant love child.

No problem. Its just that the papers use the same newswires and tell the same story. It happens often on FR whenever a breaking story hits.

Not in todays world. That would mean taking individual responsibility for ones own actions/words.

Isn't Garner Irish? I know Fox is half Irish and probably thanks God for every drop of that blood too!
