Laura does wave with her thumb sticking forward. That has been mentioned here before. She also does a little thing with her pinkie finger too. I happened to notice that Nancy Reagan does the exact same thing with her thumb when waving. Check out yesterday's thread the 2nd photo in #12. It must be a First Lady secret wave.
