Coleman compared to Sen. McCarthy by British legislator
Minneapolis Star/Tribune (aka The Red Star) ^ | 5/13/05 | Kevin Diaz/Rob Hotakainen

A day after Sen. Norm Coleman implicated a member of Parliament in a U.N. oil-for-food scheme, the British legislator shot back Thursday in a cross-Atlantic exchange of words.

The legislator, George Galloway, likened Coleman to the late U.S. Sen. Joseph McCarthy, a characterization that sets the scene for a televised confrontation on Capitol Hill Tuesday, one that could further raise the Minnesota Republican's profile.

Coleman already has gained international attention for calling on U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to resign as a result of the oil-for-food scandal.

The latest showdown began Wednesday when the Senate's permanent subcommittee on investigations, which Coleman chairs, released a report accusing Galloway and former French Interior Minister Charles Pasqua of accepting vouchers for millions of barrels of Iraqi oil-- which could then be resold at immense profit -- in exchange for their support of Saddam Hussein's regime.

I've never heard Coleman debate but given Galloway's penchant for rash comments as well as defensiveness, I can see Coleman getting the better of him in any debate.

Opinions anyone?

In a debating contest, whomever is answering under oath loses - unless of course you are Ollie North going up against a bunch of Senate stiffs.

In their zeal to malign Conservatives with the 'McCarthy' epithet they always manage to ignore the fact that, for the most part, McCarthy was right and his detractors were covering their own rears. IMO The same is true in this instance.

No opinion, but's here's tons of background information:

-MP George Galloway- voice cries "peace," hand in Saddam's till...--

-"No Blood for Oil"- Kojo & Kofi: Unbelievable U.N. stories--

-ADSCAM -- Canada's Corruption Scandal Breaks Wide Open--

Yes, they are interlinked.

I'd like to see it, but I'll probably be away from the TV. Galloway appears buffoonish; a part of the AlQueda/DU ideological merger.

Oh yes! I can't wait to see this show. Galloway's manners are no better than the dems.

I want to see another child throw a temper tantrum. We need some new blood. I'm getting board with the dems old tune.

Coleman seems to be a rising star in the GOP. I think he'll get the better of Galloway, just as McCarthy got the better of Sens. Millard Tydings (D-Md.), Scott Lucas (D-Ill.), and William Benton (D-Conn.), who lost their seats after tangling with Tail Gunner Joe.

If he thinks Sen. Coleman is another Joe McCarthy, I wonder what he thinks about Tom DeLay?

Coleman has been impressive. He deserves a standing 'O' for his comments yesterday during the Bolton hearing. He's one Repub that has a spine.

The charge of "McCarthyism" is the first resort of every exposed Communist. If that doesn't work, they move directly to "Nazi".
