Davidson County Democratic Party Chairman Rodney Mullins resigned Thursday morning amid child pornography allegations, according to press secretary Jean Carter Wilson of the Davidson County Democratic Party.
Wilson said authorities searched one computer at the Democratic Party’s French Landing headquarters in MetroCenter. Wilson said they did not seize that computer. Metro Police spokesperson Don Aaron said Thursday that Mullins has not been arrested.
Metro Police and the FBI are jointly investigating.
“Our chairman has stepped down and he has not been arrested,” Wilson said. “I am told what is happening is he is being investigated for allegations of child pornography on a computer.”
“We at the Party didn’t know anything about this and we hate like heck that it has happened and we are just trying to gather our resources,” she said.
Several phone calls to Mullins were not returned.
Tennessee Democratic Party Chairman Randy Button issued a statement Thursday saying he had been informed of the resignation and “that Mr. Mullins is being investigated concerning crimes involving child pornography. If true, this is very disturbing and regrettable news.”
“We don’t have a lot of facts concerning this case, but if true, these are very serious allegations,” Button said. “As a parent, I am very disturbed by any activity that exploits children.”
Federal laws provide for both criminal and civil penalties for possession or distribution of child pornography in some cases.
Wilson said the Davidson County Democratic Party has a full slate of elected officials to lead the party that includes Acting Vice Chair Bob Cooper.
Mullins, 35, had served as chairman for about a year, Wilson said. A new chairman could be elected as early as June.
Mullins had also served as the Tennessee for Dean coordinator for Howard Dean’s presidential campaign in 2004.
