NYP: TRUMP & THE TOWERS
New York Post ^ | May 12, 2005 | NICOLE GELINAS

Posted on 05/12/2005 5:40:18 AM PDT by OESY

Donald Trump has built much of modern New York. But on the most important building project ever — the quest to repair New York's smashed heart and broken skyline — Trump's hands are tied.

Nevertheless, Trump is New York's only hope.

Gov. Pataki and his minions have refused to listen to New Yorkers and Americans, and do the right thing at Ground Zero. Gotham's last best chance to repair Downtown's legacy is if Pataki will listen to Trump.

Trump said it straight in last week's Post: "I think the World Trade Center should be rebuilt on the site, only stronger and a little bit taller." Since then, he's been deluged... with near-unanimous support....

"I've received literally hundreds of letters, saying rebuilding the towers is so right and what they're building is so wrong," Trump told me yesterday. "I don't think I've ever had more people comment on something... people are clamoring for this. Not one person has said the idea's wrong... if you did a referendum, it would be 98 percent."

But Pataki still seems hell-bent on getting his skeletal Freedom Tower up into the sky — so that those who look at Manhattan's skyline would see only an empty symbol of defeat.

New Yorkers have gotten a few weeks' reprieve from the Freedom Tower. It's now back to the drawing board again — partly because, as originally designed, it was structurally unsound. ("Buildings need floors," Trump said — "It's an important structural element.")

But — barring a miracle over the next few weeks — the latest version of the Freedom Tower will still be a 70-story office building topped by at least 600 feet of false angles and empty space....

"If we build this pile of rubbish, the terrorists will have won," Trump told me....

Victimology and NY State politics have created such a FUBAR that the process has become a monument to the success of the terrorists. Trump speaks the truth, but Pataki will never listen to him.

Donald is right about one thing and thats advancements in building technology.

Kevlar, Titanium, High density ceramics, etc, etc...

The buildings can look the same, but can be at least ten times stronger.

There's more public input into a quarter-block park with two benches and a lawn than there has been into what will be a major feature of the skyline.

Pataki is pathetic, and he is a major embarassment for the GOP and the State of New York.

Trump is an overrated windbag parading around under a lacquered "hair helmet"...but on this issue he happens to be right.

How about arming the buildings as well, long range air to air missle batteries, high powered machine guns for close in distances, constantly monitored radar systems to watch for incoming air traffic -

And who wins if it is going to be Trump's name on the tower? I wonder how much he paid for the article....

Pataki, another draft avoiding wimp.

It will be interesting to see which branch of the military his son Ted chooses to serve in

My thoughts as well. Since 9/11 I have often thought that AEGIS would have been quite effective.

A Phalanx weapons system will provide the towers and its environs with the protection necessary against any incoming missile or plane. It already provides ships of the U.S. Navy with a "last-chance" defense against anti-ship missiles and littoral warfare threats that have penetrated other fleet defenses. Phalanx automatically detects, tracks and engages anti-air warfare threats such as anti-ship missiles and aircraft, while the Block 1B's man-in-the-loop system counters the emerging littoral warfare threat. This new threat includes small,high-speed surface craft, small terrorist aircraft, helicopters and surface mines. Phalanx accomplishes these engagements via an advanced search and track radar system integrated with a stabilized, forward looking infra-red (FLIR) detector. This integrated FLIR provides Phalanx with an unique multi-spectral detect and track capability for littoral warfare threats and dramatically improves the existing anti-air warfare capability. Block 1B also incorporates new Optimized Gun Barrels which provide improved barrel life, improved round dispersion and increased engagement ranges.

Phalanx is the only deployed close-in weapon system capable of autonomously performing its own search, detect, evaluation, track, engage and kill assessment functions. Phalanx also can be integrated into existing Combat Systems to provide additonal sensor and fire-control capability

I remember when it took the city years and millions of dollars to try and build an ice rink. It failed. Trump stepped in and got it done in a matter of months and below budget much to Koch's chagrin.

Pataki-step aside and let a man do it.

Trump is right. They should be looking at the old WTC drawings, build it with 21st century materials, make it one story higher and get to work.

Trump is right. Pataki has completely screwed the pooch on this one. Pataki should just remove himself from the process and start over again.

This was his chance to prove he could play in the big leagues, and he struck out, big time.

Speaking of Big Time, put Dick Cheney in charge of this project, and it will be done by Christmas.

The towers need to be rebuilt, bigger and better, the tallest buildings in the World, and taller than anything envisioned before. How there is even a question on this point I can not understand.

Yes - that Phalanx weapons system would do nicely - Thank you for finding that
