ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The governor signed a bill Tuesday renaming Baltimore-Washington International Airport for Thurgood Marshall, the first black justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Beginning Oct. 1, the airport will be known as Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich signed the bill as civil rights leaders and lawmakers looked on.
"Our purpose is to honor a great mind who did the most to end legal segregation in America," said state Delegate Emmett Burns, a Baptist minister who introduced the bill.

Puke. I guess Planned Parenthood International was already in use.
Who gets the Ruth Bader Ginsburg International?
And how many of those present at the signing ceremony in Annapolis are voting for this MD governor in 2006?
ANS: NONE!
If the GOP had acted like the dems today, they would have filibustered him.
I'm from Maryland and this is SO STUPID!!!!!!!!
It's such a long name. Well, it's always been called BWI and so everyone will continue to call it BWI.
Ehrlich is such a RINO!
I hope Lt. Governor Michael Steele runs for Senate. I really like Steele.
He can have Baltimore. Reagan has D.C.
Why did they have to put it on the end?!!!! That makes it even more stupid. If they absolutely HAD to rename it, then it should have been the Thurgood Marshall-Baltimore-Washington International Airport.
Marshal Marshal's kid is a classmate of my kid.
Showing my age here but I still remember Friendship Airport.
No. It used to be "Friendship Airport"! I liked that and was sorry they changed it.
I said it wrong. For many years, it's been called BWI so everyone will still probably call it BWI.
Hope, Arkansas..
Master plan for a new airport in Maryland complete. The Baltimore Aviation Commission selects 3,200-acre site in the vicinity of Friendship Church, Anne Arundel County, 10 miles south of Baltimore and 30 miles north of Washington, D.C.
1947
Construction on new airport begins and is officially named Friendship International Airport.
Because the front end is reserved for Robert C. Byrd -- eventually it will be "The Robert C. Byrd Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport"
Ah yes, the Liberal Way........you can't have anything with Christian references......it's racist and immoral.
Hope, Arkansas..
According to her bio, she's from Brooklyn and a lot of her time is spent in NY and DC.
Disgusting. Marshall was a racist
Politicians pandering to black dem voters will be naming airports for mailmen on unindicted NBA ball players soon. Can you imagine what the black racist thugs would do.say if, in 20 years, some airport changed it's name the Clarence Thomas International Airport?
Small favors!
I'm sure it chaps our Congressman's a$$ that he couldn't get it named Elijah Cummings International Airport.
