Majority of Poles say they fear Russia

Big News Network Tuesday 10th May, 2005 (UPI)

Poles are more fearful of Russia than of any other nation in the world, an opinion poll published Tuesday suggested.

The poll showed 51 percent of Poles expressing fears about Russia, compared with 27 percent fearing China and 19 percent fearing Germany.

Poland suffered for centuries under czarist and Soviet oppression, and many ordinary Poles regard the country as a historic enemy.

Fears have been heightened in recent years by Russian President Vladimir Putin's increasingly authoritarian style of leadership and his apparent unwillingness to come to terms with the Soviet past.

The poll was published in Tuesday's edition of the Gazeta Wyborcza newaspaper and was conducted by the widely respected PBS polling agency. The poll was conducted April 23 among a representative sample of 800 adults. The margin of error was not given.

Well, for good reason! They're certainly not an ally. BTTT

Considering that Russia was one of three countries (Prussia and Austria being the other two) that partitioned Poland in the 1790s, and that Russia and Poland had fought numerous wars prior to that point, do you blame the Poles for not trusting Russia?

Fear of Russia would be commonplace in any of what were once puppet governments of the Soviet Union. The crushing of rebellion in Hungry - using Polish troops and others - and the brutal oppression of locals by the Polish communist government, which didn't fart without Kremlin approval from 1945 to 1989, lies within the memory of the adult population. This coupled with a fluctuating border alliance starting with the Lithuanian Polish merger to a non-existent status during the Austria-Hungry period to a shifting of border alignments and a new Poland in 1919 ( as memory serves me ), and FDR's infamous contemporary handover of Poland to Stalin will, sadly, live on for another couple of generation, and I agree with them. Russia is not to be trusted. Ever.

I'm glad you like it.
I like it too, that's why I spent 32 of my 33 years here.
And not going to move anywhere.

Why on earth wouldn't they?

I only wish that the US would do something to strengthen them and help them to overcome the fear of the "bear".

Just one thing.

Writing The crushing of rebellion in Hungry - using Polish troops and others you probably meant Chechoslovakia in 1968, because the Hungarian uprising in 1956 was supressed by the Soviets themselves.

Roosevelt was a cold bastard. It's time to shatter the golden image the leftist communists have created of him. To dis-habilitate him, if that's a word, the way the Russians did Lenin not so long ago. OTOH, they seem to be REhabilitating Stalin, so who knows where their minds are at. I think they should rehabilitate the Czar. He and his family are the ones that got the rawest deal out of the whole thing.

But Germany is probably historical friend:).

Neither one is.

This article is not related to Germany.
If they conduct a poll about Germany - I'll let you know.

"Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the party’s leader, himself then concluded: “Russia now wants to humiliate Poland because it can no longer command us, because we prevented the suppression of democracy in Ukraine," a reference to the broad Polish support for the ‘Orange Revolution’ in late 2004. "The nation’s dignity requires the Polish president not to allow that.”

My people experienced the domination of both nations and both were horrible but Russia took away their means of livelihood. Neither has been trustworthy and if the Poles decide to trust either they had better have their heads examined.
