To any old timers: Did the Russians pull this pissing contest stuff about who deserves more credit for destroying the Nazis during the Cold War or is this a new phenomenon?
Actually the Soviets taught in their schools that the efforts of the other "allies" were minimal in the defeat of Germany. They didn't even teach students that the allies invaded Germany from the West. They told students that Stalin in his maganimity gave them shares in the administration of Germany after the war was over.
I know this because the wifey grew up in the Soviet Union and that is what she was taught.
There is no doubt that the Soviets deserve more credit than the western powers for destroying the Nazi war machine. But it isn't like they did it out of any kindness in their own heart- they had to do it.
Also, in addition to the courage of the WW2 Russians, add in a good solid measure of fear of the political commisars and soviet secret police. Further, the Germans, by committing atrocities, didn't exactly endear themselves to many eastern europeans and ukrainians, and revenge became a motivating factor for many.
