Son's arrest torments councilman
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 5/6/5 | Chip Johnson

His head hung low, his voice barely audible and the energy seemingly sapped away, Oakland City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente resembles a weary, battered boxer struggling to find a second wind between rounds.

The odds-on favorite to become Oakland's next mayor, and who typically exudes a swaggering confidence, is trying to shake off the effects of a 1-2 punch that has knocked him off his feet.

Last week, his namesake son was arrested on charges that he beat and raped a 15-year-old girl who was abducted off a street last month in the Fruitvale neighborhood that his father has represented since 1992.

On Tuesday came another thundering blow, when his son appeared in court on the charge: Ignacio De La Fuente Jr., 32, was charged with the assault of a 21-year-old woman in August -- based on a DNA "cold hit" match with samples taken from the recent assault.

The events of the past two weeks have caused the senior De La Fuente to second-guess just about everything he's done as a father, including his decision to remain in this country some 40 years ago when he arrived as an illegal immigrant looking for work. . . .

if he was a repub the press would be demanding that he share the cell next to the thug.

So am I reading this correctly. He arrived here as an illegal immigrant and that decision is what caused his son to be a low life rapist scum?

My, my. Where else but the Bay area could we get all this blubbering about the poor mayor and his deviant son...and nothing about the two young women that were assaulted.

What ?

Do rapists earn more money in other countries ?

Man, you are on a roll today! That's the second time you made me laugh out loud, and I'm not even that happy right now.

Now, it's America's fault.... If he had stayed in one of the Banana Republics, perhaps his lazy assed son would have been too busy cutting sugar cane to prowl the streets raping women...

Next week --- this leftist POS candidate for Mayor will be blaming it on President Bush....

No if he stayed in Mexico, his son wouldn't be in jail

I did not know he came from Mexico.

If so, then would he earn more as a Tijuana policeman ?

**...at trial a DNA match can present a huge obstacle to acquittal. **

Well, hasn't he heard about the Race Card?

That always seems to work.

Gosh, when did Ignacio start admitting it? He used to assert that he came here all legal an' all. Over and over and over and over.

Now the truth comes out. My, did that '86 amnesty application getcha through Iggie?

This butt-wipe has been screwing up Oakland for the last decade. He's one of the jerks who pushed through required multi-lingual staffing for the city of Oakland. Something that even pissed off the Black people there.

In the end, one has to ask: what special skill, knowledge, or life achievement is it that he has that would make him the ideal mayor of a city that size? The fact that he was a creep who broke the laws of the U.S., lied about it in plain sight, laughing at the gullibility of people who bought the lie, and calling anyone who raised the subject about him a "racist" ? (yes, he did that).

Screw De La Fuente and his rapist spawn. Even Huey Newton had more integrity. De La Fuente should just be happy he was never bounced back to Madness Land where he came from.

I'll give him a pass for coming here illegally, since it was 40 years ago. I read through the responses, then I went back and read the entire article. It doesn't sound like he's making excuses for his son, he's just shellshocked, as any decent parent would be.

De La Fuente Jr. has a long history of problems with the law and violence going back to the early '90's. This shouldn't come as a shock to anyone, including De La Fuente Sr.

He's chagrined because his psycho son has ruined his chances at even larger graft than he gets now.

Bummer...

As I am, as always, the liberal optimist who can always find a silver lining, let me suggest that he can at least take confort in the fact that his son, who was raised in a town called "Fruitvale" is out raping females instead of males. See, a silver lining!

You shouldn't give him a pass on anything.

Ten years ago the first Chronicle articles I read on him had him claiming that he "came here" in 1972. That's 33 years ago. So all of a sudden it's 40 years? The story mutates to diminsh his responsibility. And gets worse.

Why should a guy who came here illegally have any position of trust? What's his line - "elect me, I know how to turn a city into a disaster area"? Or how about - "elect me! I'm from Mexico, I don't believe in no gringo laws, and I want to make laws for you so it will be just like Mexico here!"

You get the notion. The guy's kid is just picking up on the world view of dear old Padre: contempt for laws, macho chutzpah ("I can do anything I want, including doing what I want to those women!"), a belief that his father's position puts him out of reach (it would in Mexico), a thug outlook on everything.

De La Fuente has pulled the race card on anyone who ever criticised him, has agitated to undermine any semblance of American culture and laws left in Oakland (wasn't much to start with, admittedly), and been whispered about for years as being up to his ears in dirty dollars.

He can just live in the mud he made.
