"Marquette McGuires" Molly Maguires????? (I know it's reference to Al instead)
To: GSWarrior
"Marquette had been known as the Warriors since 1954. The school's former mascot, an American Indian named Willie Wampum, was nixed in 1971 over concerns that it was offensive."
And from what I've seen of Marquette football, he couldn't play defense, either.

"We live in a different era than when the Warriors nickname was selected in 1954," the Rev. Robert Wild, Marquette president, said at a news conference. "The perspective of time has showed us that our actions, intended or not, can offend others." I, for one, am mightily offended that they changed from Warriors. But then I'm just an white Christian male alumnus, what voice should I have in this debate.
Of course I do love laughing at them when they make fundraising calls

Just change ALL teams names to a color. And since there are hundreds of colors, no two teams anywhere in America need to have the same name. Now that's diversity. They just need to make sure that when two teams play, the colors don't clash. That could be offensive.

I'm glad the series forms haven't passed out of FR.

"Most racially offensive team name ever?"
Maybe they weren't named for human Chinks. Maybe they were named for the flaws in medieval armor.

At least one other school uses the Golden Eagles name...Clarion University of Pennsylvania (in the same conference with Slippery Rock University). Division II, I think.

Slightly OT: The middle school in Pflugerville, TX shouts "PMS! PMS!" during football games.

Maybe they were named for the flaws in medieval armor. If only. By the time I was a student they'd gotten rid of the costumed mascots, but my mother told me about the halftime shennanigans of the "Chink" and "Chinklet", who would run onto the court in full Chinese regalia, including coolie hats, and do an acrobatic routine with lots of bowing.
When they were talking about changing the name, I suggested "Chinese-Americans," but they went with "Dragons."

Franklin and Marshall Diplomats ("Dips" for short) Go Dips is at least better than Go Nads!

Well, if you want to get technical, no. But I don't think too many fans watching the Whites and Blues play will be yelling, "Hey! White is a value, not a color! Get it straight!" Unless the stands are filled with art students.

Pity when they don't trust the judgments of good people like us, isn't it?
