As They Say on TV, 'Paul, You're Fired.'

Watching Paul Martin address the nation last night, I couldn't help thinking of all the times he and his predecessor didn't speak to Canadians directly.

Not after 9/11, even though 24 of our countrymen were murdered by terrorists. Not when we joined the war in Afghanistan. Not when we declined to back the U.S. in Iraq; not when we naively rejected the U.S. missile defence program.

Not when the government refused to compensate thousands of victims of the tainted blood scandal, many of whom are dying as they continue to await justice today (despite a hasty Liberal flip-flop on the issue Wednesday night, which will change little). Not even when the government decided to redefine the institution of marriage.

No, none of those things were deemed important enough for the Liberal prime minister to address the nation.

But hey, through all of those events, the Liberals were doing fine in the polls.

Now, of course, thanks to AdScam and evidence at the resulting Gomery inquiry of corruption too repugnant to ignore, the Liberals have fallen behind the Conservatives for the first time since the late 1980s. So naturally, it's a national crisis!

Liberals have long confused their interests with those of the country -- just as, if even a fraction of the AdScam allegations prove true, they clearly confused their own pockets with those of average Canadians. But this is just too much.

Think about what Martin asked of us last night: He wants us to let ethically compromised Liberals continue to spend our money for almost a year, until the ongoing inquiry into how they stole our money is complete.

After more than a year in office in which his main accomplishments were (a) calling an inquiry into the scandal his party created and (b) becoming known as a ditherer on every other issue, he wants us to believe he has work to do that's far too important to be derailed by an election.

The Liberals have spent all week announcing this "work" -- which the rest of us would describe as "pre-election goodies." There's the latest bid to improve a perennially messed-up immigration system. There's the foreign policy and defence review that's been languishing a mere seven years or so. (It goes well with that national daycare program promised, oh, 12 years ago in the Red Book that Martin wrote.)

Why, on Tuesday the Liberals even had an epiphany on helping crime victims and war veterans! They must be desperate. Next they'll be telling us they're finally going to scrap the GST -- if we just give them a little more time.

Last night, with a straight face, Martin lamented that "partisan jousting" over the scandal is paralyzing Parliament. This, from the guy who a week ago was screaming non-sequiturs in the House about the Conservatives' "hidden agenda" to destroy health care, rather than answer a simple question about his own Gomery testimony.

He wants us to believe it would be bad for the country to have an election before Gomery's final report on AdScam comes out -- some eight months from now. This, from the guy who called the last election before any of the really damning facts were known. (He said he had to do it so he could fix health care "for a generation," remember? Great job he did, eh?)

For all its urgency, there was nothing new in Martin's message, or his absurd "commitment" to call an election precisely when it will be most convenient for the Grits. Except that it was the most blatant, manipulative, power-grabbing ploy they've come up with yet.

An address to the nation? Martin's brazen, grasping TV performance was more in keeping with that other Thursday night prime-time show, The Apprentice, where contestants argue desperately for their jobs.

All that was missing was for Conservative Leader Stephen Harper -- whose response was strong and sensible -- to come out and say, "Paul, you're a disaster. It's over. You're fired."

Now it's just a matter of time.

Well then. I hope everything gets taken care of when the time comes to cast ballots. It's a pity it's taking this kind of thing to get people *really* upset, but... Liberals is odd creatures, masters of deflection, magicians of innuendo, and they can sometimes be the most pitiable victims when needs be.

Really. Good luck to Canada on getting rid of its cancer.

Some here have suggested a great idea: We will trade America's liberals for Canada's conservatives!!

That's why I don't understand these idiot "progressives", they have plenty of Socialist Utopias to pick from....why don't they just go there and leave America the hell alone?

It seems to me that the Liberals in Canada are de facto ending Canada's democracy. They are in trouble and are going to delay a vote until they can legislatively buy off the votes they need to stay in power.

Now the scary part. This is a window into what the future would look like if the dems get back into power in the U.S. They were caught flatfooted in 1994 and assumed that the results were a temporary setback, i.e the status quo would be restored. Well, that hasn't happened and you can bet your arse that if they get power back they will NEVER risk losing it again. The left thinks it is entitled to power by virtue of their (self-perceived) superiority. By hook or crook they will retain power.

Think this sounds farfetched. Already, the dems are pushing the fairness doctrine again so that they can shut down media outlets taht they don't agree with. That would be the tip of the iceberg. Next would be pushing forth some sort of judicial review for election results that congress does not certify. Ahh yes, the ability of Judges to overturn election results the dems don't agree with.

Great article. Just like here in America, the left seems to scream loudest when they are in the most trouble. I'm just amazed that this is being pointed out in a major Canadian newspaper.

We're on your side Canada. Hope you get a conservative government again and are unable to undo the years of socialist damage.

Sadly Stephen Harper (leader of the Conservatives) is sure to screw it up. Peter MacKay OTOH is much more capable and is seen by Eastern Canadians as a more viable candiate. Harper has way too much baggage from Alberta and is not viewed favourably by Ontarians.

But for my money I think they should consider Belinda Stronach http://www.conservative.ca/media/ON/Stronach.htm or she should a least consider my sincere proposal of marriage (grin)

Could you add me to the Adscam ping list? It's kind of like watching a slow-motion train wreck. :)

I really hope people will wake up and vote these guys out. However, when I talk to people, I'm not so optimistic. I had a friend who said, "Who cares about a little corruption? It's nothing compared to what the Conservatives *might* do."

I had to bite my tongue...

ke-minded ilk who hate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and by stepping on average Canadians by giving money to their rich friends.

** The Cons would allow their pay-masters in the oil industry to rip off Canadians while wrecking the environment.

** The Cons have no government experience, no sophistication, and are simply political opportunists.

** Remember Mulroney and all his corruption and scandals? Mulroney's Conservative Government screwed Canadians and helped only his rich friends.

** The Cons would destroy Canadian culture by privatizing the CBC and getting rid of Canadian cultural institutions. The Cons would weaken the Canadian fabric that keeps us all bound together.

** The Liberal Party is the party that has given good government to all Canadians. Canadians keep electing Liberal governments, because the values of Canadians are Liberal values, and Liberal values are Canadian values. The Liberal Party gave Canada its flag, its social welfare programs, its rights and freedoms, and its strong and growing economy. The Liberal Party is the party of fairness, equity, tolerance, and justice.

** NDP supporters need to vote for the Liberals instead of throwing away their votes and which would ensure a Conservative government. The Liberal Party is the real party of social justice anyway; NDP values are Liberal values. NDPers must support the Liberals to save Canada from the Cons.

** If federalists in Quebec vote for the Bloq, they will be jeopardizing Quebec's place in Confederation, and all the privileges and advantages and financial benefits that entails.

** All Quebec federalists must vote for the Liberal Party, Canada's only truly national party, the only party that has saved and will save Canada.

** Steven Harper takes his orders from the backroom; Mulroney, Manning, Klein, and Harris are all telling him what to do. This backroom crowd will wreck health care for Canadians, but Paul Martin and his Liberals will save health care. Liberals think health care is for everyone; Harper and the Cons want to see your wallet before they let you, or your parents, or your children have an operation or treatment. Under a Conservative government, you'll have to be rich before you can have a hip replacement, a cardiac bypass, or dialysis treatment.

I know it's hard, but we can't afford to bite our tongues any longer. At least try to explain....they need some educating, and we seem to be the only ones who understand the truth.

Sorry..

My post must have been too long as the start of it was cut off.

It is from a post I copied from the Free Dominion site, purporting to be a leak of the Liberals "planks" in their campaign platform.
