CASSELBERRY, Fla. -- Grief counselors are talking to students at Lyman High School about a classmate who was killed. Casselberry police say 17-year-old Brandon Burkhart was riding on the hood of a car Sunday night, when he fell off and was accidentally run over.

Burkhart was riding on the hood of a friend's car because they had locked him out and he was just trying to play a joke. Monday, his classmates are learning a valuable lesson on how fragile life is.

As soon as first period began, Lyman High School principal Frank Casillo made a very important announcement.

"At this time, I would ask that the campus have a moment of silence in memory of Brandon. So please stop in the classrooms for a moment of silence," Casillo said.

The 17-year-old junior was accidentally killed Sunday night while taking a joyride on a friend's car.

"He was on top of a hood and they slammed on the brake and he fell off ... trapped under the tires," said student Amanda Hocking, who was in ROTC with Brandon.

"It's hard. Everyone's like, 'Oh, you know, why was he doing that?' He was just playing around. It wasn't supposed to turn out that way," said Alicia Perry, a friend of Brandon's.

The Seminole County School District sent a team of guidance counselors to help kids get through these difficult times.

Bummer. We really don't appreciate how fast 20 MPH is. Just run, as fast as you can, into a tree. Most of us can't make 15 MPH on our own two feet.

A lot of things become fragile when they come in quick contact with 2 ton pieces of metal.

Monday, his classmates are learning a valuable lesson on how fragile life is.

Hood ornaments are designed for riding on top of a car - kids are not.

Class dismissed.

How do "grief counselors" get sent to schools so quickly when something awful happens? What, do they fall out of the sky? They seem to be sprinkled all over America.

I'm sure they'll outsource them to India eventually.

Bad things can happen when teenagers treat a car like it's a toy.

Has been known to happen before--had an acquaintance who survived being bucked off a car in front of the Pioneer Bar in Leadville, Colorado in the fall of 1960--he spent a long time in a body cast but recovered--

He wasn't stupid -just drunk---

Good point. Where the heck do these touchy-feely "grief vultures" come from?

Thye don't needs grief counselors. They need a stereotypical nun or overbearing grandma to take them by the ear, drag them to the blood spot and say " See What happens whe you're STUPID".

Grief Counselors are leaches that create the illusio that you should be suffering, then exploit your suffering

I would say also the driver needs some sort of 'darwin' award. "slamming" on the brakes was not exactly the smartest thing to do either.

No, he wants the name of the auto manufacturer that did not put a warning on the roof saying not to ride on it or a seat belt on the roof in case you do.
