A moral duty to resign

A moral duty to resign

After years of Liberal lies and corruption, Paul Martin has no right to govern at all. He should ask Canadians who they want as their leader, says Michael Coren

I CAN just imagine the Liberal spin doctors with their sleeves rolled up, drinking numerous cups of coffee and looking stressed and under pressure. Just like, in fact, some character out of The West Wing. Because truth be told, many of the boys and girls who work for Canadian parties and politicians think they're on The West Wing. I've even heard some of them repeat lines straight out of the show, seemingly unaware that they're mouthing some vacuous cliche written by a Hollywood hack. But you see, it's the process and the style rather than the ideology and the truth that tend to matter to such people.

Which brings us to Prime Minister Paul Martin and his claim that he has the moral right and responsibility to govern Canada.

Really? I'm not entirely sure how he comes to that conclusion. Perhaps God told him so in a dream, or maybe he assumes that only he can lead this country to glory and happiness.

Or perhaps it just sounded good when it was written and nobody asked what it meant. Just like Scott Brison's silly moans about those named in the corruption scandal being "war profiteers" in the struggle against separatism.

Or Ken Dryden's recent characterization of parents who want to stay at home with their children as being naive and unrealistic. Or Judy Sgro's apparent confusion about who helped her in the election. Or the sudden and magical reversal of belief on the subject of gay marriage from so many Liberal cabinet ministers.

Or the Liberals, with Paul Martin always in an extremely senior position, changing their minds on GST, free trade and a host of other fundamentally important issues. Or the Liberals promising to end child poverty by the year 2000 but in fact doing little as child poverty expanded in various parts of the country and is nowhere even close to disappearing.

Which brings us back to the Prime Minister's claim that he has the moral right to govern Canada. What he meant by this intensely arrogant statement was, surely, not that he had the "moral" right but that he had the "absolute" right to govern.

Yes, the absolute right. Liberals have the right to govern, and nobody else is fit for the post. It's a belief apparently shared by our state-funded broadcaster, a host of newspapers, the elites and, sadly, many Canadian people.

THE 'DEVIL YOU KNOW'

"Better the devil you know than the devil you don't" is the self-comforting mantra heard on talk radio and around water coolers all over this great nation. The argument being that it just might be that the Liberals have wasted billions of hard-earned dollars, some perhaps through bribery and corruption, but at least we know they're not green-skinned aliens with three heads.

Unlike the Conservatives, who quite clearly are green-skinned aliens with three heads. Worse that this, green-skinned aliens with three heads who will force women to have babies, arrest homosexuals, make the carrying of guns compulsory and name Calgary as the national capital.

Those who are beyond salvation are, yes, beyond salvation. There is nothing that Conservatives or Conservatism can ever do to make them feel more comfortable. Political neurotics, who define themselves by how ostensibly permissive and anti-American they are on any issue of the day.

It is the rest of the country, the rational people, who have to be convinced that there is life beyond the Liberal party and that there is nothing frightening about Stephen Harper. Even though some of us wish that there was!

ETHICS GONE

Paul Martin has no moral right to govern at all. If anything, he has a moral duty to resign and ask the Canadian people who they would like to see as their leader. But Canadian governance has had very little to do with morality for generations.

There have been some good people in power, as well as some bad ones, but ethics gave way to pragmatism and ego at about the same time as The Beatles became popular.

Let our rulers have green skin, three heads and be from Pluto for all I care. But let them be honest and true. And moral.

leftists never ever under any circumstances voluntarily relinquish power. down here only republicans step down when shamed; dems only leave the day the indictment is handed down, and sometimes not even then.

he should declare himself ruler for life, up there it would probably be accepted without a peep.

Actually, the polls are starting to look good. SOME Canadians are waking up. :-)

The latest poll by Ipsos-Reid

Highlights of the poll:

* Nationally: 36 per cent of decided voters would vote Conservative, up six points since the previous poll. Liberal support remains unchanged at 27 per cent. And 15 per cent would vote NDP, a four-point drop.

* In Ontario: Conservative Party support reached 39 per cent, a seven-point rise. Liberals have 33 per cent, a one-point drop.

We were told the Conservatives would win last time too by the polls - and as soon as the results were in from Atlantic Canada I knew they were wrong.

I don't know when the East will get fed up enough to vote in the Conservatives.

granted i over did it asper my usual ranting.

in fact there are two canads, the west is reasonable and full of normal people who are currently paying for those who are little more than a rather large extension of the massachusetts territory.

canada may well balkanize like the past soviet union as there are too many entrenched political interests with near total control and support of a dependent and aging population. the best and brightest in the east up there are gone or leaving... unless they can manage a spot in the government.

It's sad to see the handful of "stand up" Canadians suffering so much at the hands of the leftist skunks that run their country these days, eh?

I think there will be more than a handful of us leaving if things don't change soon.

I don't want to leave, but I am getting sick of living in a banana republik!

Perhaps the most telling - if not downright remarkable - finding in this particular poll, and one not surprisingly glossed over by the ever-pro-Liberal msn:
Unlike last June, Stephen Harper (at 40%!) is currently out-distancing his Party in the crucial area of public trust!

IMHO, this is the most hopeful news for us - and worst possible for the Liebrals - given that pretty much their principal hope of clinging to power clearly lies in being able to once again demonize Harper personally.

The Liberal Party and Morals don't belong in the same sentance.

The more people who meet, or even get to know about Stephen Harper, have to love him.
I've met him, and I can see he's strong, reliable, quiet(shy maybe), and principled.

Just watch the man. He's going to lead us to a great future, for Canada, and all of North America. :-)

Is the Ken Dryden quoted in this report the same Ken Dryden who was Montreal's goalie in the 70s and 80s? Is he a political figure in Canada? I remember he went to Cornell and was involved with Ralph Nader long ago.

The Liberal Party and Morals don't belong in the same sentence.

Rasblue, you are absolutely correct!
I beg forgiveness, and promise to try to stop using the two words at the same time.

Hold on. LOL.

The Liberals have bad Morals.

See? It works. That sentence was correct.

Have a beer on me. ;-)

Should "Liberals have Bad Morals" be pasted on the back bumpers of our cars?

Maybe then, and only then, we would see how many of THEM there are, and, more importantly, see how many of US there are!

Yes, it's the same Ken Dryden, and he's in the liberal trough. Go figure.

Bump for bumper stickers!

They CAN, and WILL, try to keep our advertising from getting across to the people, but if we all pasted bumper stickers on the back bumpers of our cars, (where the liberals belong) we all would know that we ARE the MAJORITY!

We have to be!
1/2 of Canadians are not stupid(for the most part)

That is exactly what the Lieberals are afraid of.
We are more informed now than they ever wanted us to be.

Please let me know if you want on/off the Adscam ping list. :-)

Thanks for responding. I'm always sorry to see an athlete take the leftist line. Not too many do, fortunately. The idea of a hockey player being a liberal seems incongruous.

They tell us down here that you all live for "Hockey Night In Canada." Of course, that wouldn't have taken up any time this year. Anyway, enjoyed your links. Good luck getting some Conservatives in, and let's get back to our normal government-to-government relations.
