Suspect shoots, kills self before police can activate Taser

PLEASANTON - A Union City man sought by police on warrants for felony assault and stalking fatally shot himself Saturday morning at a local motel as police were trying to take him into custody.

About 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Pleasanton police went to the Motel 6 on Hopyard Road, where they found 36-year-old Malvin Bell. Police found him there doing a routine license plate check of vehicles at the motel. Police discovered a guest at the motel had a restraining order against Bell, said police Lt. Joe Buckovic.

Pleasanton officers also learned the Hayward Police Department had notified law enforcement agencies on March 17 that Bell had allegedly threatened to kill his girlfriend, their children, police and himself.

Police said that when Bell reached for a handgun in the room, a Pleasanton police officer fired a Taser at Bell. But Bell shot himself in the head before the Taser could be activated, according to the police statement.

Bell was taken to Eden Memorial Hospital in Castro Valley, where he was pronounced dead later Saturday.

The handgun Bell used was reported stolen in Oakland in January, police said.

I'm certain that the anti-cop crowd can explain some grand conspiracy that makes this the Cops' fault.

No conspiracy here, just a self correcting problem.

The guy perceived the taser as a tourure device and chose suicide over torture at the hands of the gestapo.

Something like that?

This type of situation can become very dangerous for police and also put them in a bad light with the media. Sometimes people who are intent on suicide will set up the situation so that the police have to kill them in self defense. I pray for the safety of our law enforcement. It's a very tough job and often they get no respect from the citizens.

Should've confronted him on March 17th then.

What!! The guy pulls a gun and the cops attempt to use a taser? That's stupid! I figure you only use a taser in the same kind of situation that would call for using the baton. Using the taser is better than having to wait all night for the idiot at the hospital ER getting treated for being "thumped". What was that line from the Choir Boys? "...they use their fists, you use your baton; they use a knife, you use your gun". Kovinski's law or some such thing.

The bad guy pulls a gun...The kop pulls a taser...Something wrong with that picture???

Seems as if the dead perpetrator was as bad as you all suggest, he would have shot the cops first, and then himself...He clearly had the capability...

But NOOOoooo...He's been accused so he is guilty and deserves to be dead...

They call that 'suicide by cop'. A real worm's way out.
