Rift emerges in GOP after Schiavo case
Boston Globe ^ | April 9, 2005 | Nina J. Easton

Top conservative leaders gathered here a week after Terri Schiavo's death to plot a course of action against the nation's courts, but much of their anger was directed at leading Republicans, exposing an emerging crack between the party's leadership and core supporters on the right.

And yesterday they issued an ''action plan" to take their crusade for control of the nation's courts well beyond Senate debates over judicial nominees, pressing Congress to impeach judges and defund courts they consider ''activist" and to limit the jurisdiction of federal courts over some sensitive social matters -- a strategy opposed by many leading Senate Republicans.

''This is not a Democrat- Republican issue; it is a liberal-conservative issue," Rick Scarborough, a Baptist minister and chair of the Judeo-Christian Council for Constitutional Restoration, sponsor of the gathering, said in an interview. ''It's about a temporal versus eternal value system. We are not going away."

In the charged battle over the future of the nation's courts, conservatives so far are outgunned financially. Last week, liberal groups mounted a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign designed to build support for the filibuster and thwart Senate confirmation of nominees they consider extremists who will pursue a ''radical agenda and favor corporate interests over our interests," as one MoveOn.org radio advertisement intoned.

That could happen easily and overnight. The split is so close to 50-50 that any last minute rumor has the power to throw an election the other way and from the top to the bottom of the slate.

>we cannot keep watering down our principles by choosing the " lesser of the two evils".........

I've said repeatedly over these threads that "the lesser of two evils may be tomorrow's evil, and I'd rather be wrong today than sorry tomorrow."

The point being that evil is evil whether it is of the 9 1/2 degree or of the 9 3/4 degree, out of a max of ten.

I agree with your statement 100%, pollywog.

I read that the parents have decided after receiving spiritual guidance from Jesse Jackson, to accept Terri's passing as God's will.

There is a time to die for each of us. God knew when Terri was going to die. That we can accept. Was it God's will that Michael lie, cheat, torture, and a judicial system act in with corruption? I think not!! He KNOWS everything, and He will have the FINAL SAY someday, but right now, corruption and evil rules the day, no doubt about it.

Well unfortunately we don't have Jesus Christ electioneering for President (and when he does rule it sure won't be because any mortal voted for him). We will have to wait till Heaven to see the Perfectly Righteous Party.

There are many comparisons with the climate of the day of the Founding Fathers. Massive change was underway then, too. They kept their cool, mainly by admitting that no matter how sure they were of their own judgement they might be ultimately wrong. So they went slowly, but with intense debate and put all the issues out in public for scrutiny. We have as many or even more heavy issue debates underway due to the effects of technology, and massive change is underway. We need to see this in total, not just a set of isolated issues.

You can wait and NOT vote. It's your prerogative.

In the meantime, I'll exercise my right to vote and persuade others to vote like I do.

"I, for one, think that judges should face removal for not basing their decisions on law"

You mean like, "No person shall be deprived of life...without due process of law? What did Terri do to deserve the death penalty?

"Keep in mind that the judicial decisions made in the Schiavo case (even those by liberal judges) were very conservative decisions based on longstanding law."

No, actually, that can better be described as a duck and run. What justices actually made any decision, other than judge greer? What opinions did they write?

"but I also want my right to die protected."

And where is that in the constitution?

Coroner Seeks Inquiry Into ‘Mass Euthanasia’ At Hospital (UK)

"The 11 patients, all men aged between 65 and 93, died in the Rowsley ward for the elderly at Kingsway. A review of the cases, ordered by the coroner, found evidence that their deaths may have been speeded up by withholding sufficient food. "

I know Terri's parents said this. But you would never know it from what we are reading here.

Was it God's will that Michael lie, cheat, torture, and a judicial system act in with corruption? I think not!!

Is it God's will that you pronounce such judgements against this man and the courts without ANY REAL evidence to back up your accusations?

"No one took away Terri's right to life,"

A judge ordered no feeding/hydration for her. Those that tried to take food an water to her were arrested.

You are wrong here. Her life was taken away.

You're right.

I live with a terminal disease and still don't have the guts to make a living will....I just don't know how I might see things when I encounter those final days!
It's not an easy question. I don't want to think about it.

"We need to see this in total, not just a set of isolated issues."

I agree, but the overriding factor to me that trumps all other issues combined is IMMIGRATION.

You write of the Founding Fathers. Just to remind you that back in the late 1700s this country was 99% Christians. What has happened? Back in 1960, a mere 5 years before the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 90% of all immigration (legal and illegal) to our country was European, as intended by our Founding Fathers. Today over 90% of all legal and illegal immigration is non-European. What has happened? What has happened, and continues to happen, is that our immigration policies and laws today discriminate against European immigration as a collective. This is not happening in a vacuum or by accident - it has all been planned by the enemies of Christianity, that which gave rise to our culture, traditions, mores and way of life. That which gave rise to Western Culture.

Hold on to your hats boys! We'll soon be up to our necks. If we are lucky we'll morph into another 3rd world banana republic, like a Cuba or a Brazil. If not, prepare to defend your own.

"(like me and most of us if we were confronted by her hellish circumstance) wanted to die."

So that must mean that she also wanted to die.

First problem I have with your analysis, is that you have no way of knowing what she was going through.

Second problem I see, is that you are making the presumption that if you wouldn't want to live the way that you think she was living, she also did not want to live like that. Who are you to decide?

She may well have determined that, while it was not the best way to live, that she still wanted to live anyway.

No guts no "glory."

There is an ongoing problem with people getting sucked down this starvation pit who neither wanted nor anticipated it. There has to be a fence.

Also, feeding tubes may well, have not even been around when Terri was found unconscious in 1990, they certainly were not well enough known to have been an issue regarding life and death decisions.

They certainly were around. What wasn't around was the notion that they could be used to justify killing people.

The borders are dissolving before our eyes. This need not destroy our nationality.

As a parallel consider some military theory that has come about due to technology. There was a time when forts and strong points would impede the invasion of the enemy armies. Now, forts are next to useless, in fact, even worse than useless because they eat resources. Now consider the Jews who were scattered to the four winds. They managed to preserve a nationality with no forts at all, very modern. I would propose that territory, land, is no longer the basis of the modern State. The territory is invisible, nearly a state of mind. America is not so much a particular acreage but an idea, a very ancient idea including the name itself. We like the idea of owning a home on a lot with definite corner markers. That is important. We extend the idea to our towns and states and the entire Federal nation. We should keep all that, it is the growing tip of the shoot. But, the planet is a closed system still and faced with massive population growth so there is pressure on the national idea. The idea of America is the best idea we ever had and ought to be preserved, but let us see what is actually happening that is beyond our understanding; we may never get another chance to have an America. We shouldn't gamble on this.
