Terri Schiavo Before dehydration

Top conservative leaders gathered here a week after Terri Schiavo's death to plot a course of action against the nation's courts, but much of their anger was directed at leading Republicans, exposing an emerging crack between the party's leadership and core supporters on the right.
And yesterday they issued an ''action plan" to take their crusade for control of the nation's courts well beyond Senate debates over judicial nominees, pressing Congress to impeach judges and defund courts they consider ''activist" and to limit the jurisdiction of federal courts over some sensitive social matters -- a strategy opposed by many leading Senate Republicans.
''This is not a Democrat- Republican issue; it is a liberal-conservative issue," Rick Scarborough, a Baptist minister and chair of the Judeo-Christian Council for Constitutional Restoration, sponsor of the gathering, said in an interview. ''It's about a temporal versus eternal value system. We are not going away."
In the charged battle over the future of the nation's courts, conservatives so far are outgunned financially. Last week, liberal groups mounted a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign designed to build support for the filibuster and thwart Senate confirmation of nominees they consider extremists who will pursue a ''radical agenda and favor corporate interests over our interests," as one MoveOn.org radio advertisement intoned.

Of course not. That would be irresponsible to vote for Democrats that are doing the same or worse than Republicans. However I believe the time has come and WILL, when a third party option will open up. As long as we have the right to vote, we need to exercize that right!! It may take several lost elections but I feel we cannot keep watering down our principles by choosing the " lesser of the two evils".........
I can certainly understand your frustration -- I am frustrated as well, that neither Jeb nor W were able to do more. But I think that they did have their hands tied, because all the pirranhas ( read liberals) were sharpening their teeth to get them impeached and removed, if they did anything, however good the intent.
But don't worry, neither Jeb nor W is forgetting Terri and what was done to her by the judiciary.
They WILL make changes -- but just engaging in strong rhetoric would only backfire on them.
They could well be working with the right people in Congress and the Florida Legislature, to make sure this will never happen again, as a first step.
In the meantime, I hope the Congress and the Florida Legislature will grow some backbone and will go after the judges, who ignored the law they just enacted.
Where do I sign up? What shall we call it?
Please don't make excuses for those who turned their back on Terri. THERE'S NO EXCUSE!!!!!!! And don't try to pacify us with that nonsense about how they are going to make it up to us. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!

It isn't a rift. That is a mis-characterization of the urgency of the debate. Who knows where the debate will go, there are no referees. The debate is amongst Conservatives not Liberals, which is odd considering that the Liberals are deeply divided and the Conservatives are not.
I am NOT trying to "patronize" you.
But, we need to direct our anger to the real perps, and that's Greer and all the judiciary who went along with it.
Just like, we could blame President Bush for not preventing the attack on 9-11, instead of the terrorists, who actually perpetrated it, but the blame belongs on the terrorists.
Here the full blame is on Greer and the Judiciary. Remember, Bush got Congress to pass a bill in record time on Easter Sunday, it was the judges who thumbed their noses and ignored the law, that they were supposed to uphold.
I don't know that the purpose of Terri's continued existance in this world was for her parents to extract some personal joy out of it. However good their intentions.
I think they just couldn't let her go, and I don't blame them.
Doesn't mean it was best for Terri to keep her in this state indefinitely till some other medical complication made the life vs death question more compelling.
I read that the parents have decided after receiving spiritual guidance from Jesse Jackson, to accept Terri's passing as God's will.
What's this have to do whith the Shaivao case? And "Activist" court would have denied the wishes of Terri and her husband.
The courts, in this case, acted "Conservatively".
This is all going to be a big mess...
Section 2 of the constitution of the state of Florida states :
All natural persons, female and male alike, are equal before the law and have inalienable rights, among which are the right to enjoy and defend life and liberty ... No person shall be deprived of any right because of ... physical disability.
Jeb Bush had all the authority he needed to remove Terri from those who would kill her and save her life. Indeed, his oath of office requires it :
I, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support, protect and defend the Constitution and government of the United States and of the state of Florida ...
I certainly hope to. All of those who participated in the torture and murder of this innocent disabled woman must be held accountable. No justice, no peace!!!!!!!!!

Let us set the record straight on this one right now. First of all, the court ordered a guardian ad litum who said Terri should not have the feeding/hydration tube removed, so the guardian ad litum was removed. Then the court looked into whether she was in a PVS state and the courts first heard 4 doctors and 2 said she was NOT in a PVS state, and 2 said she was, so the court hired, a 5th doctor, who worked with the judge, who also said Terri was in a PVS state. The court determined that she was in a PVS state.
The court also heard testimony from 4 withnesses regarding her wishes. Three of the witnesses (all named Schiavo) said they had heard her say that she didn't want to live like "that" (whatever "that" means), and a 4th witness that Terri actually got mad at for making a joke about Karen Ann Quinlan and the rest of that story which indicated that Terri disagreed with having a respirator removed, much less a feeding tube.

Unfortunately, it may take a lost election before the conservative right wakes up and realizes that "We, The People"......are rising up.
That is NOT what the Shiavo case was about AT ALL.
Maybe not on the surface, but ultimately it comes down to this question.
The issue is of course complicated by questions regarding her husband's testimony on her wishes.
Everybody knows that this was a euthanasia case, no ifs and s or buts.
That's your opinion. And you could be right.
Still when it comes to the law it was about the right of an individual to decide on what medical measures could or could not be used to keep them alive.
Jorge: What if they were wrong? What if Terri in fact did want to live and was screaming for mercy on the inside while she was starved to death, but couldnt voice that desire?
That would be a horrible thing.
But somehow I couldn't imagine someone with the ability to think about such issues, after being in such a state as she was for 15 years, begging for more of the same.
I would tend to think a person would rather want to be liberated from such a prison of a living death.
That's just my opinion. I would want to be let go.
But wouldn't want to have had to been required to swear it on oath beforehand... too much TROUBLE
