All this adulation of John Paul II, a man of monumental moral stature, must be gnawing at MSM innards.
You could almost hear the command go out from the NBC honchos: "find me something we can use to bash a conservative. Make it Bush if you can."
And sure enough, Today managed to come up with a great two-fer this morning, managing to take swipes at both W and Condi over the exclusion of Jimmy Carter from the US delegation to the papal funeral.
Andrea Mitchell, reporting the story, clearly wasn't buying the White House line that Carter politely asked himself to be removed from the invitation list when he learned that space was very limited.
Tongues-a-clucking, Katie and Andrea wondered aloud at least three times why the White House didn't simply ask the Vatican for one more invitation, "especially because Pres. Carter was the first and only president to invite the Pope to the White House, and shared an interest with him in Third World issues."
Andrea surmised this was all pay-back for Carter's harsh criticism of the Iraq war, which he called a "quagmire," predicting the failure of the January elections.
Not content to snipe at W, Today also managed to get in a shot at Condi. Asked Katie "under the circumstances, wouldn't the right thing have been for Condi Rice to step aside and give Carter her place?"
Mitchell acknowledged that, after all, the Vatican is a state, and as the chief diplomatic official it was logical for Condi to attend. Nevertheless, Andrea opined that Rice should have ceded her seat to Mr. Peanut.
You could almost hear the sigh of relief on the set and in the NBC executive suites. After an intolerable week, Today was back doing what it does best: bashing Republicans.
Wow - I had forgotten about no Christmas lights. Our neighborhood had a contest for the best decorated house without using lights.
I graduated from college in 1980 and I truly believed that I would never own a home because of the sky-high interest rates. And the finagling and scheduling my family had to go through to deal with making sure we could get gas for the car - "those were the days". I'll gladly pay $2.50+/gallon to not have to live through that again.
I guess I'm more offended by giving Clinton a ride to the funeral.

What's sad is that had I been eligible to vote in 1976, I probably would have voted for Carter. Of course, I would have had little idea back then of what the guy was really about. But Ford sucked as well.

And that about sums up Mr. Carter and his presidency.
By the way, gator, I have to mention that I flew north from Jacksonville, FL yesterday, and my seat-mate was a cute U of F sorority girl. She was on her way to Chicago to visit her boyfriend. Anyhow, she was a nice girl, but, frankly, don't think her IQ was much above room temp.
Just as an example, we were flying into Philly, and asked me to locate it for her on the map - she had no clue. She also asked if it was a big city, having no idea it was once the capital of the US!
On the other hand, she was a Republican and did vote, so I have to give her credit!
She mentioned that Gators look down on FL State people as dumb. If that's true, and if she is a representative Gator, I can only assume that Florida Staters are about as smart as a bowl of porridge!

Hey, don't feel bad. I'm even worse than that: in '88, before finally seeing the light, I voted for Dukakis!!
It's becoming increasingly evident why Carter pounded so many nails for Habitat for Humanity. He knows, even better than we do, what a colossal failure he was as President. He had to do something to save his butt, at least in the eyes of the public, if not historians.
Carter can go as the North Korean representative. He's helped them out before, why not again?

I was in elementary school when Carter was elected. I didn't know much about his presidency, but I do remember my parents being stressed about his presidency. They were young parents, my father was a minister, my mom a teacher and finances were tight. They didn't discuss it much in front of their children but I can remember feeling an undercurrent of stress. When Reagan was elected I felt like my parents were hopeful that things would get better and by and large they did. Thankfully we had a Republican congress when Clinton was in office.

Good post. Also, though I have never spoken with either Bucky or Bubba, I understand Bubba to have a better personality than Bucky. He's probably one of those guys who though you disagree with everything he says and does, can't help but laugh at his jokes and such.
I gotta believe that the Today show harangue about Carter won't bother GWB in the slightest and have the added benefit of pissing carter off all the more as it becomes all the more public. That's what I call a two-fer.

Maybe Bush has nothing in common with Carter. Often Bush had nothing in common with JP2 but diplomacy dictates that he attend and be invited.
Actually, though I really don't have a dog in the fight, I tend to root for good ol' boy Bobby Bowden and the Noles over the Gators.
