Today Show Rips W, Condi for Failure to Invite Carter to Papal Funeral (Peanut Gallery Alert)
The Today Show | governsleast governsbest

Posted on 04/06/2005 4:27:30 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

All this adulation of John Paul II, a man of monumental moral stature, must be gnawing at MSM innards.

You could almost hear the command go out from the NBC honchos: "find me something we can use to bash a conservative. Make it Bush if you can."

And sure enough, Today managed to come up with a great two-fer this morning, managing to take swipes at both W and Condi over the exclusion of Jimmy Carter from the US delegation to the papal funeral.

Andrea Mitchell, reporting the story, clearly wasn't buying the White House line that Carter politely asked himself to be removed from the invitation list when he learned that space was very limited.

Tongues-a-clucking, Katie and Andrea wondered aloud at least three times why the White House didn't simply ask the Vatican for one more invitation, "especially because Pres. Carter was the first and only president to invite the Pope to the White House, and shared an interest with him in Third World issues."

Andrea surmised this was all pay-back for Carter's harsh criticism of the Iraq war, which he called a "quagmire," predicting the failure of the January elections.

Not content to snipe at W, Today also managed to get in a shot at Condi. Asked Katie "under the circumstances, wouldn't the right thing have been for Condi Rice to step aside and give Carter her place?"

Mitchell acknowledged that, after all, the Vatican is a state, and as the chief diplomatic official it was logical for Condi to attend. Nevertheless, Andrea opined that Rice should have ceded her seat to Mr. Peanut.

You could almost hear the sigh of relief on the set and in the NBC executive suites. After an intolerable week, Today was back doing what it does best: bashing Republicans.

He is why I became a Republican!

It was the first time I voted, and the last time I voted for a Democrat!

There was a time when I thought of Carter as a well-meaning man who,as President, was simply over his head. However, in the last few years I've developed a contempt for him that rivals the contempt I have for Die Schlickfrau and Lord Teddy of Chappaquiddick.

Dittoes. I had fallen for the "greatest ex-president" line. Now I see him as vainglorious and vindictive.

There are people arguing right now on another message board I post on that LAURA should give up her seat for Jimmy.

It's also been said that the US didn't have formal diplomatic relations with the Vatican during the Carter years and that's why Jimmy couldn't attend. Any truth to this?

"They said that about Condi? Really? They suggested a black woman give up her seat to a white southern male?"

Excellent!! Hadn't thought about like that!!

he sent his Mother and not a member of his administration to Pope John Paul I's funeral
Like most sane people I thought Carter was the worst president in history (until x42 came along . . .). But it has to be said that sending your own mother to a funeral is not exactly showing showing disrespect. And it further must be said that John Paul I was pontiff for a relatively short time, and - at least partly for that reason - did not manifest the historic legacy that John Paul II has.

Just as the funeral of Ronald Reagan was a bigger deal than that of Nixon, Truman, or even Eisenhower, because Ronald Reagan (with Thatcher and John Paul II) made his time more historic even than Eisenhower and Truman did.

Andrea Mitchell is Barbra Streisand on peyote.

Thankfully, I'd put the coffee cup down before reading that...

Carter is why I became a Republican also! And I was a long time Democrat... from a long line of Democrats.

One day my husband had tons of work... one night in December Jimmy is on the tube and no work the very next day.

He should just drift into obscurity. Wave bye-bye to a nonentity.

I remember gas lines, no Christmas lights, 18% interest on mortgages, giving away the Panama Canal, no Olympics, the betrayal of the Shah, the Iranian hostage crisis, malaise, etc.etc. etc.

Exactly. Maybe we don't hate the 70s so much for the clothes as we do for the Carter Administration...

I think the clothes were a result of American society crying out for help. You will notice when President Reagan took office ther was a sudden dearth of leisure suits and banlon.

With the irony being that we all went for the natural fabrics...see we are good for the environment. ;-)

"He can go to Rome on his own, but he can't go to the funeral without an invitation; it's 'invitation only' Mass with 200 nations being represented, mostly by their head of state"

He is more than welcome to stand outside with the common people!!

The more I think about it, I am certain I am right. We were all driven to despair by Jimmy Peanut, and just like those homeless crazy people that go around dressed as the Queen of Sheba or the Emperor of France, we were all wearing our funny suits in order to inflate our crushed national confidence.

And I won't even discuss the decor of the period. Shag carpet and flocked and foil wallpaper!!!

All Carter's fault, if you ask me.

When Jimmy Carter had a chance to go to a Papal funeral as President, he sent his mother!

A rather small correction if you will allow. TWO Popes died during his term and he missed both funerals. Further he didn't establish formal relations with the Vatican and it took President Reagan to do so.
