Vatican Communications Director Weighs In On Pope, Schiavo
Vatican Communications Director Weighs In On Pope, Schiavo "Baldini asked (Archbishop John) Foley who is second in command to the pope.
"Well, the secretary of state, institutionally has the responsibility for being what you might call the papal prime minister," Foley said.
Foley emphasized that nobody should sell the pope short because he is a man with an iron constitution and an iron will.
When told that Terri Schiavo had passed away, Foley immediately said a prayer.
"Why don't we say a little prayer for her. Eternal rest grant unto her, oh Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her," Foley said.
He then reiterated the church's position on denying food and water to a sick person.
"I think it's inhuman to declare that a person should not receive hydration, water, or food. We know that old people are dependent. We know that handicapped people are dependent. And we can't deny them food or drink. These are basic human rights. I think it's tragic that she was left in that condition. But now, thank God, her suffering is over and she has gone to God," Foley said."
