Actually I read another article that explained it better. The first shot was under the chin shooting upward. It broke his jaw and exited out under his nose making a bloody mess, leaving him highly messed up but still very much alive. It took another shot to finish it.
The first bullet went from below the lower jaw and through the front of his mouth (either he was a very determined man to do himself after all that pain and the skin burning from the gasses or he was struggling and his assassins couldn't get the angel right) the second was to the temple
