Terri Schiavo's 2002 CT scan
MSNBC ^ | 3 29 05 | msnbc dan abrams interview

Posted on 03/29/2005 9:45:05 PM PST by flixxx

TRANSCRIPT Updated: 4:04 p.m. ET March 29, 2005 The overwhelming majority in the medical community say Terri Schiavo has close to no brain activity and has no chance of regaining awareness. Dr. Ronald Cranford, who actually examined Terri Schiavo in 2002 and testified to her condition, joined "The Abrams Report" on Monday. Cranford is the assistant chief of neurology at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis as well as a faculty member at the University of Minnesota's Center for Bioethics. Below is the transcript of their conversation.

DAN ABRAMS, HOST: You're one of the few people who has actually examined Terri Schiavo and you're hearing all of these people who are coming on from the sidelines saying, "She's has been misdiagnosed," et cetera. How confident are you in your diagnosis and why?

DR. RONALD CRANFORD, UNIV. OF MN NEUROLOGIST: I'm extremely confident. I think at the time of the trial in 2002 there had been eight neurologists who examined her. And of those eight neurologists total, seven of them said beyond any doubt whatsoever Terri is in a vegetative state. Her CT scan shows severe atrophy or shrinkage of the brain. Her EEG is flat and there's absolutely no doubt that she's been in a permanent vegetative state ever since 1990. There's no doubt whatsoever, Dan.

I agree. Michael is vicious and vindictive. Having Terri's body cremated upon death and buried in the Schiavo family plot after STARVING and DEHYDRATING her is unthinkably cruel. Amazing that some people mistake hatred for LOVE.

" I'm certainly not an expert, but I can read it well enough to understand that Terri's brain is in very bad shape.

I wouldn't expect anyone to make a firm diagnosis based on one scan, but on the other hand the scan is pretty clear in the fact that Terri's brain injury is more significant that some want to accept."

Atrophy proves nothing. From the literature, it has been shown that cerebral atrophy on CT does not necessarily correlate with cognitive dysfunction.

National Library of Medicine:

"What was expected to be the most heated discussion during the meeting--that on the role of the CT scan ....with the experts agreeing such a technique could be valuable in ruling out certain treatable causes of dementia but
could not give a definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or multi-farct dementia."

It has also agreed that when used with elderly patients, the CT scan cannot differentiate between pathological brain atrophy and "normal" brain atrophy.
In addition, Dr. Robert Katzman of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, and Dr. Ernest Gruenberg of Johns Hopkins University,
both argued that there is no direct correlation between cerebral atrophy and cognitive dysfunction.
Dr. Gruenberg noted that autopsied brains of severely demented persons sometimes show little atrophy and vice versa.
Dr. Katzman pointed out that the hallmark of senile dementia of the Alzheimer's type is pathological change in the neurons, not atrophy of the brain."

Archives of Neurology :

" Atrophic changes on CT scans, however, were not necessarily correlated with any intellectual dysfunction, or only weakly so, independent of age."

I'm getting pretty tired of this.

One more time, I made no judgment as to her capabilities.

None at all. I have probably said this 30 times or more on this thread.

I am concerned about the reading comprehension abilities of many freepers though.

Where in the world are you guys getting this crap based on my post?

The scan shows atrophy. That's all I said.

I have been getting called all sorts of names on other threads because I refuse to give an opinion.

You guys need to calm down.

" One more time, I made no judgment as to her capabilities."

You presented yourself as an expert, you said that her CT ( and it was only one image, not the full twelve ) was one of the worst you had ever seen and that she had significant brain injury.

If you don't want crap, don't make statements you're not qualified to make.

The scan shows significant atrophy. It is right there in front of you.

BTW, I am fully qualified to say it is the worst I have ever seen. Do you not understand how that works?

I have seen hundreds. This is the worst I have seen. There is no way you can argue that now can you?

Take a good look at this thread. Look at how many times I have had to say the same thing over and over again.

This isn't hard.

The scan shows atrophy. Are you denying that?

This is a CT scan from 1996, she didn't have one in 2002

Yes, she did. It was discussed in the court records.

I didn't realize that you were an MD, I apologize for saying that you weren't qualified to interpret her scan.

I'm not a doctor. But I am a paramedic (it's on my homepage)

In all those years I spent lots of time looking at these and learning as much as I could about reading a scan. I also took some classes that dealth with suff like this.

The MD's would let me try and interpret and then tell me if I was right.

So, I just wanted to clear things up.

What the hell is wrong with you? You are going back to a post that is 5 days old?

And you are saying I go on and on?

My post was made ON THE DAY we were discussing this.

What are you doing going back to the 30th?

I have no opinion that I am willing to share with you about Terri's feeding tube.

Why are you going back to a post made days ago?

A top notch neuroradiologist who has looked at this scan of Terri Schiavo told me the following: "No conclusions can be drawn between anatomical abnormalities and physiological function. I have seen patients whose CTs looked like this and the people were functional."

I don't understand why this thread is still active. The poor woman is gone.

I am going to say to you what I have said at least 30 times on this same thread....

The scan shows atrophy. That is not a normal brain.

But I made ABSOLUTELY NO COMMENT ABOUT HER MENTAL CAPABILITIES.

It is abnormal. That's ALL I said.

I know this may seem harsh to you since there was nothing wrong or confrontational about your post, but just skim through the last 200 posts or so.

I have had to address this exact same thing over and over again.

What I think about Terri Schiavo is not something I am willing to discuss.

"The scan shows atrophy. That is not a normal brain.

But the problem was/is that the immediate world concluded that she must indeed have in a vegetative state because of the abnormal scan that even the untrained eye can see. Even some medical people, including an Ivy League medical ethicist whom I heard interviewed last week on a talk show, authoritatively made an unknowable inference from her bran scan that Terri could "feel nothing" and "died without discomfort." The experts in neurological imaging and neurological function know that this physician might think he knows, but in fact has no way for anyone to know that from the scan and is apparently unaware that there are people who have had CTs that look like hers and do have mental function.

She had lots of therapy in the early years without improvement.

No she did not.

Her parents said that very little therapy was ever given to her.

Mikey her husband went ot court promissing to spend the money he would win in the lawsuit to rehab Terri.

That never happend.

There was no attempt to rehab terri at all.

The nurses at the hospice also testified to that.

Mikey the bastard never allowed the nurses to even brush Terri's teeth.

He wanted her dead for a very good reason...dead men ( or women) tell no tales.

Yes. She did receive therapy. Take a look at the links on Trinity_Tx's homepage.
