The Village Voice piece was written by Nat Hentoff (leftist, atheist and I think former head of the ACLU). It isn't all that unusual for him to disagree with most of his colleagues on the left-- I find we're on the same side pretty often. He seems to be a very decent human being.

Nat Hentoff is a self-descirbed atheist, liberal Jew who is against abortion. Someone once asked him, "If you don't believe in God, how come you're pro-life?", to which Hentoff responded, "Because life is all I have."
