CLEARWATER, Fla. - A prominent brain specialist believes that Terri Schiavo can recover with proper treatment.
Dr. William Hammesfahr, nominated for a Nobel Prize for his work in medicine, told the Christian Wire Service that he "and others I know have treated many patients worse than Terri, and have seen them regain independence and dignity."
Dr. Hammesfahr said he has examined Terri Schiavo three separate times for a total of over 10 hours. "There are many approaches that would help Terri Schiavo. I know, because I had the opportunity to personally examine her, her medical records, and her X-rays."
The doctor has helped patients with chronic brain injuries - including hypoxic encephalopathy, Schiavo's injury - recover. Judge Susan Kirkland of the Florida Department of Health said that he was "the first physician to restore deficits caused by stroke."
Dr. Hammesfahr was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology in 1999. In 2000, his work resulted in approval for the first patent in history granted for the treatment of neurological diseases with medications that restore blood flow to the brain.
"It's time to help Terri instead of just warehousing her," Dr. Hammesfahr said. "She would have benefited from treatment years ago, but it is not too late to start now."
One look at this clown's web site plus his bogus Nobel Prize claim leads me to believe that he's a QUACK QUACK QUACK.
It was strange.Hannity had the guy on day before yesterday and he seemed plausible.
All I know is that a search for him on nobelprize.org comes up with nothing.
Do they supposedly list all nominees at that site?
Now, who do you suppose has come up with irrelevant info to smear the claim the doctor makes that he knows how to help her? Either he can or he cannot, and that does not have anything to do with who nominated him for a Nobel or whether he lost a lawsuit about billing practices.
All the way back to 1901. It's the official Nobel Foundation web site. I would expect them to know whether this guy was nominated or not.
To claim to be a Nobel Prize nominee in Medicine and Physilogy is literally impossible, since the Nobel Committee does not release the nominations for 50 years after they are received from the appropriate and legally designated (by the Nobel Committee) sources. Dr. Hammesfahr's nominations are from a Florida congressman and a group of Chiefs of Police. By the same token, Dr. Kevorkian was "nominated" by a letter for the Peace Prize in 1999.
As bad as the case is at this point, Dr. Hammesfahr (do a search on http://www.quackwatch.com which indicates that he has been subject to administrative action for making unfounded claims) is not a credible source of support. He claims to be able to cure everything from stroke to ADHD and ADD by the same methods, but the research is sloppy at best.
More than anything else, the Terri Schindler story is the death of the mainstream (broadcast) media; they've failed completely in covering the landmark event of the year -- not because of the conventional drama of armies on the march, but because they have no language and emotion for communicating this story. It's not about ideology; it is about compassion. The story is not so much about Terri -- as it is about the different responses to the facts, and what people regard as the facts, from their own experiences and understanding of life. The subject herself is almost the perfect Rohrschach ink blot. It's ultimately not about Terri -- but about everybody else.
The best the mainstream media can come up with is their bogus polls, "As you may already know..." What a presumption; we don't know, and the more one knows, the less one could say that it is merely a matter of a right to die issue; it is a right to die versus a right to live -- and which should trump which. Apparently to a lot of liberals, the right to die should trump the right to live only in the case of human beings but should be inviolable in the case of anything else -- even trumping the right of any other species over that of a human, so confused are they, so determined to be "right." It's not about rights or who is right. It is about what is human.
The richness in the discussion of this is where the new media of interaction vastly surpasses their laughable polling feedback which is already so biased in their design and intent. The death of Terri Schindler was the death of the mainstream media to be a viable, credible part of American life. To the end, they insisted on telling the people, vastly more intelligent, informed and compassionate than they are, what to think and how empty it was to be them. They had nothing worth learning about -- to be a better human being.
It's irrelevant whether this guy lies about his credentials?
Maybe to you.
Maybe he also lies about his abilities.
A case like this brings out every quack and huckster on the planet to get their 15 minutes of fame and publicity.
So all the hand-wringing by those "professionals" who wish to submit Terri to more procedures and complain that her care was negligant are possibly motivated by the same goals attributed to Michael... money.

I keep hearing/reading that statement. My question: Who nominated him? What does it meand to be nominated for a Nobel Prize? Can anyone send in a nomination. I'm always suspicious at bios or resumes that gild the lilly and imply "honors" that aren't clearly spelled out.
One of my past surgeons was sued for billing practices - he lost the case initially and then won on appeal. That didn't make him any less than an outstanding doctor/surgeon. I trusted him with my life and would do so again!!! Unfortunately, if I ever needed his services again I'd have to travel up to CT for treatment. He was the most caring, professional and skilled surgeon I've ever had the good fortune to know.
I believe other people have been stating that about him. Nobel Peace Prize nominations are high suspect, but it's usually better for the harder sciences.
He was "nominated" by a local congressman - a very informal thing, just a letter. From all I have read, the congressman isn't even qualified to be a nominator.
It's been an embarrassment to the congressman.
Hammesfahr was asked to stop calling himself a Nobel Prize Nominee as there is no evidence that the Prize committee even gave that letter a consideration.
He tried to pretend he got a confirmation letter, but just couldn't find it/forgot (he was asked to bring it to trial). That was shown to be a joke at trial. It was more like a personal note from the secretary saying "yes, we wrote a letter".
