To the Editor:
Where was the outrage when former KKK member Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) went to the floor of the senate and railed against the first black, female candidate for Secretary of State, Condaleeza Rice?
Where was the outrage as the feeding tube was taken away from Terry Schiavo and the attempt to starve her to death began? Liberals support the killing of the innocent, abortion, but not the convicted (death penalty) and now this. Who is next? Cancer patients? Alzheimer's patients?
Why do liberals pretend to care about the education of our children yet they bow to the teachers unions interests when the topics of school vouchers and charter schools are raised as an alternative? More spending is not the only answer.
Where was the apology for being wrong on the chance for free elections in Iraq when things went off as scheduled earlier this year?
Where is any kind of plan from the Democrats to stave off the impending failure of the Social Security system? To say a system that was originally designed with 16 workers paying in for each recipient getting benefits can go on with no changes now that there will be two workers paying in for each recipient getting benefits is disingenuous at best. The Democrats have become the party of no, no plan, no ideas and no clue.
Where is the alternative plan for our energy needs other than voting no on opening up ANWR and it's potential of 10 billion barrels of oil? The caribou population increased tenfold since the Alaska pipeline was constructed decades ago. Sen. Kerry, with six SUV's, two powerboats, a motorcycle and a jet plane, says we must conserve. Liberals always love to tell others what they should do.
How many liberals, in favor of higher taxes, have checked off the voluntary box on their Massachusetts state income tax form to pay the higher rate? At last count, only about 1000 out of over two million returns have voluntarily paid the higher rate. I did not.
Where are the outcries for tougher sentencing from liberals after the horrific killing of 9-year old Jessica Lunsford by repeat offender John Couey? Liberals love to take up the cause of criminals like Couey but are conspicuously absent when the topic becomes the victim. If liberals cared half as much about victims of crime as they do caribou, they would be taken more seriously.
Why do liberals fight free market trade and competition? Workers in manufacturing have been suffering from "outsourcing" for 100 years. It is worth remembering that textile jobs in South Carolina today were originally outsourced from Massachusetts. While in the short run, the transition was painful for Massachusetts's textile workers, they soon found better jobs in new industries. That is why per capita income here is and always has been far higher than that in South Carolina.
Hysteria about job losses caused by overseas outsourcing ignores a crucial fact: Americans lose jobs primarily because people develop innovative ways to do things faster, better, and cheaper. In other words, human creativity is a double-edged sword, bringing productivity improvements and, very often, widespread job loss. The good news is that the net result is not fewer jobs, but more jobs and more productive ones. The horse-and-buggy industry was destroyed by the invention of the cable car and then the Model T. General Motors' Frigidaire "electric ice box" wiped out a whole set of occupations in the 20's, including ice box manufacturers, ice gatherers, and the manufacturers of the tools and equipment needed to handle large blocks of ice.
Why do liberals love to scare their constituents? In the 1980s Japan was going to take over the world and in the 1960's it was the automation scare. As a presidential candidate in 1960, John F. Kennedy warned that automation "carries the dark menace of industrial dislocation, increased unemployment and deepens poverty." Robots, Japan, NAFTA, outsourcing and other threats to our prosperity have never sustained themselves and the doom-and-gloom crowd always are trumped by the ingenuity and hard work of the American people.
Why do liberals love to use Europe as a guide to how we should do things when unemployment is over 10 percent throughout Europe, our GDP is twice that of Europe and home-ownership, the ultimate barometer for success, is at an all time high at over 70 percent?
When are liberals going to peel off their "Re-defeat Bush" bumper stickers? It really shows a lack of understanding for our Constitution.

I just visited blue-stated in-laws in Minnesota recently and was amazed in St. Paul that on how many campaign signs were amidst the snow but so visible and prominent four months after the election. To be sure the local campaign signage ordinances weren't being enforced.
Things like that illustrate that political correctness is like a cultural equivalent to what on the individual level is called insanity: it's a belief structure that reinforces thinking which is out of touch with reality to the point where calling it psychotic is probably not an exaggeration. The survival instinct is one of the most basic to human nature; political correctness subordinates even that to its need to repress patently-obvious facts which conflict with its defense mechanisms.

As Moral Hazard commented on another thread, recently DNA sequencing has shown that women are more different from men genetically than either are to their chimpanzee counterparts. But mentioning that this might relate to the differences in our behavior almost got Summers fired.
I think Ward Churchill may find someday that his 15 minutes of fame was more like people slowing down to take in the view of a serious car accident than anything else.
